Need some help with an old timer

Post by digitalwizzard »

I have a 1997 Volvo 859 GLT with approximately 200,000 miles on it.
Runs really well,
The shift arrow just started flashing.
I took to be smog tested since it was due and it has the following codes..PO705, PO120, PO123....also PO442 and PO455...
It also has intermittent ABS brake light coming on.
Brakes work fine..

Sounds like a lot I know, but if I can do some of the repairs I would like to keep this car a while longer.

20 year old car is not oldtimer....it's youngtimer. ;)
Oldtimers are at age of 30.
Flashing arrow indicated a fault with auto transmission...i don't know how it can run well when it's probably stuck in 3rd gear.
P0442 & P0455 is evaporate system fault.Check gas tank cap.
Intermittent abs ligh indicates abs module fault, which needs to be re-soldered.Pm matty moo for abs module,or resolder it yourself if you know how to solder.

First, engine on, brake on (foot on brake), row the shifter back and forth about 20 times.
The PNP switch may be gunked up (common)
If that helps and is temporarily fixed, think about replacing that switch

ABS and BRAKE lights most likely mean your ABS module is bad. Get it rebuilt or buy a remanufactured unit. Check out Midwest ABS, he's a member on here: https://www.midwest-abs.com/.
Check the gas cap first for the P0442 and P0455, but otherwise it could be the hoses on the charcoal canister or even the purge valve.
The flashing up arrow is a transmission fault. Do what JRL suggested to try and test the PNP switch.

Search for that "infamous PNP Switch" repair.
It is a long thread but once you have read it, the PNP switch repair is free.
I also posted some photos in that thread.

I've also got one of the '97 855 GLT's. Mine is at 192K miles. I love it! I too had the flashing transmission arrow a few years back (2006) when it was really cold outside (-10C). I rowed the shifter back and forth about a dozen times and the problem has not come back since.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94
