Hi everyone!
I am new to this site, but I have been a volvo owner for 3 years. Something scary just happened to me. I was driving my 1984 240 series (which is in great condition) when i stopped at a stop light. Immediately as I stopped, my car shut down somehow. All of the lights on the panel went on, i.e. check oil, engine, brake failure, etc. My cd player was still going and my headlights were on still. When I say shut down I mean that it seemed that the engine wasn't running and my acelerator wouldn't acelerate! I put on my hazards and rolled to the side of the road. I shut the ignition off and put it in park. I waited a few minutes and then tried to start it up again. It acted as if nothing had happened. What happened? I am worried most of all because the break failure light went on, along with all of the other indicators, but I have never seen that before. Now of course I will be taking it in to the shop, but it is too late to do that tonight. I want some sort of idea of what I am dealing with. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
What happened?

I'm no expert but...this sounds EXACTLY like what happened to me when my timing belt went....

I think Ivychouse was still able to drive it after a while? Ivychouse?
This would indicate fuel or electrical problem.

You say it acted like nothing happened. I have a '81 245 and mine has stopped several time requiring a tow. One time they diagnosed it as a faulty ballast resistor. It got too hot and shut down.

Ours shut down once after just leaving the driveway. After tearing every thing apart, found a small 25 amp fuse that controlled the fuel injection system under the hood not in the fuse box. Prior owner had replaced it with a five amp fuse. Evidently starting had caused a surge large enough to blow the fuse.
Simply put he engine stalled, the reason cannot be diagnosed over the internet. It could be absolutly nothing, just an unexpected stall, but it could be something a little more serious. Have your local mechanic have a look at it.
Don't be alarmed with the brake light coming on, all the warning lights will come on when the ignition is on and the engine is not running, this tests the warning light bulbs and wakes sure they are working
