2004 Xc70 erratic idle

The idle on my wife's car is erratic, revvs between 1000-2000 for the first 5-10 minutes and after that it seems to run just fine (except the bumping in the transmission between 1-2). The strange revving occurs every time she shuts off the car and restarts it for the 5-10 minutes. The CEL light is on. I am unable to be there to check the car personally as i'm working out of town for a few weeks. What can this be?

Many things -- retrieve the codes to find the initial general direction. Mileage isn't stated, but for a 2004, transmission is probably just solenoids. If it does it badly enough, it may trigger a CEL, but would also include a message requesting transmission service.

Usually a vacuum leak that causes this..any funny feeling or change in the brake pedal?

Until you read codes, it's hard to pinpoint. Good news is the throttle body in the P2 s is solid, so don't get confused about hunting idle threads on the Italian throttle body used from 1999-2000/1
