XC90 2005 Axle Seal fit problem

Post by nickringelberg »

I just bought a 2005 XC90 FWD at auction for $1000 and the rear hubs were both shot. Really easy following some tips on the forum. So I replaced them for about $100 each and when I finally test ran it, I heard the CV front drivers side clicking. Not too much trouble removing the CV Axle from the transmission, again following pointers here to pry it away from the housing until the clip released. Purchased the replacement after market CV axle for about $150 and was installing it when I read that you should replace the seal whenever you pull the axle. And everybody suggests go OE. Volvo part # 6843112, $37. From what I read on the forum and other sites, that's the right seal. Ok, a little pricy, but go with the flow. Get home to install it and it's not the right size. The one I bought from Volvo is 65 mm x 40 mm and the shaft on the CV joint is more like 31 mm, so it should be 65mm x 31mm? Anybody got any ideas on this? It's the driver side seal for the axle where it goes into the transmission (or I guess its the Angle Gear?) I have the rare (I guess) FWD model, not the AWD. Does that make a diference. I guess I will go back to dealer tomorrow and see if they can make any sense out of it.

Did you check the Aftermarket CV Axle where it is supposed to meet the seal?
Check the diameter to be sure it is the same as stock.

The PN you quoted 6843112 is correct.
Next time buy Corteco brand (rmeuropean dot com), which is OEM at $10 each.

I figured it out. Thanks for the feedback and advice. Yeah, the old axle shaft and the new one are the same diameter. However, in my inexperience, I was looking for a seal around the axle and now I realize that the seal actually goes around the moving sleeve that the axle goes into. What I thought was part of the seal was actually the metal sleeve that the seal was around.

So I am alright with that seal, but now I notice a damaged O ring on the inside of the sleeve. See the 1st pic closeup. It looks removable, but now I have to find it somewhere. Probably with the dealer again, because they are close by. However, it might be a common O ring. I will check with your suggested supplier for a size. Thanks.

I called the dealer for the o-ring and they gave me the part number #8632036. $6, and they have to order it. In next Tuesday. I went for it. I couldn't find it at RMEuropean.com, but another O-ring they had listed was about the same price and the shipping was $8, so the dealer is best here.
