Just purchased a beautiful 1998 Volvo v70 xc awd with low miles, 2 owners and great condition. Well I decided to do some regular maintenance and did plugs and oil change etc. 2 days later oil was spewing out. Located the leak to rear cam seal. Replace that and decided to do the glove test for pcv system. Glove blew up like a balloon. Now gonna replace the pcv system - what else should I take care of since I'm pulling apart to get to pcv?

Clean up starter connections, clean the intake air valve, read up on cleaning the block port while you have the intake manifold off. Remember the lower intake manifold bolts just need to be loosened two turns, not removed. A 1/4 inch docket set rules here.

Thermostat replacement

Idle control valve, also the evap hoses that are in the drivers side front by the radiator. There are also several intake vacuum hoses that will be exposed with the pulling of the intake manifold that I would change out. With my two 98 V70 these hoses were falling apart due to age not mileage.

I would do every narrow vacuum line you can get to, and be done with that issue. As kahl said they are old (rubber ages even in CA) and will start leaking. Remember you will need an intake manifold gasket. Oh and for sure clean the throttle body; be sure to not get solvent inside the TPS.

Thank you all for the responses. Not a Volvo guy but a Toyota Land Cruiser owner so this is new to me but definitely versed in emissions control crap. I've done similar job to my FJ60 and FJ80. Anyone have parts # info for vacuum hoses or size info? Thanks.

That's the tricky part...I used a dial caliper to measure ID/OD + approx. length on everything I could get my hands on. Don't forget the rubber elbows....

Get paper and phone, document each hose, snap a pic , take old ones down to the FLAPS and replace in kind.

There is enough variation in routing and hoses that we don't have an accurate database of sizes and lengths

Don't rely 100% on the underhood sticker, they aren't always right.

Good approach I say +1, replace everything you can get your hands on.

I don't use elbows, I get rid of them they are a hassle. I replace everything with rubber lines or silicone lines. It's been a while since I got a new (to me) P80 car so I don't know the diameters, I just replace all of the lines at once when I get a new one. Pretty sure you can do it with 2 different small diameters, then a length of thicker hose for the brake booster (runs under the battery tray).

If the XC is the same as S70 PCV system... then
tryingbe wrote: 17 Aug 2016, 18:36 I found with the older engines, even with new PCV parts, it is not enough. The stock PCV pipe from the separator to the intake is severely undersized for an older engine. Also, the hole at the heating element at the PTC valve is tiny, like smaller than 1/4 inch tiny. Both will restrict the flow of the crankcase gases.

To address those issues, here is what I do. Get the below parts.

A 3ft 5/8 oil compatible hose. Do not use silicone hose, as it will "sweat" oil. Do not use heatercore hose, it is not rated for oil, it will become soft and you'll have to replace it sooner. This is what I use. Buy 3, as it is sold by the foot.

One 3/4 elbows from your local hardware store. (5/8 will be the wrong size!)

A 3 feet 3/16 inch or 1/4 inch vacuum hose to replace the small hose from the intake manifold to the PTC valve. I prefer silicone hose for this.

Optional, get 6 of this. I like their clamps.
https://www.ipdusa.com/products/4768...4mm-12mm-width

Optional, wireloom to protect the hose.

Take a unibit and drill out the PTC valve holes to as big as you feel comfortable. I think I drilled mine out to about 1/2 inch.

Remove the intake manifold and replace that stock PCV hose, I cut a short hose and then use a 90 degree elbow, than a long hose to the PTC valve. Replace the vacuum hose to the intake manifold to the PTC valve with the new one. Then reinstall the intake manifold.
