2000 S70 lit like a Christmas tree but no codes?

Post by aaron1611 »

So, this is my 3rd Volvo where it looks like I might have to get another ETM but first a few questions. My dash is lit with ABS, up arrow lit but never flashing, brake light, triangle, check engine light, service light, no speedo or odom and yet no codes? I went to two parts stores to use there OBD's and nothing, I bought an icarsoft off Amazon that produced no codes or info, zero. I will have all of these occurring at once or in different order or just the up arrow but it fluctuate multiple times a day or just once. Rowing through the gears does nothing. I downloaded the xemodex flow chart and mine checked out ok but is saying that my MAF is defective. My indie store is closed today but I'll probably get one on Monday. I do still have the white sticker original ETM and so I might pull one from my local pick and pull but I don't want to throw parts & money at it without a better understanding of what my issue(s) is or could be. Do I have a ground issue somewhere? 50% of the time the car drives great but it's the other 50% that wants me to drive it into a lake. My S80 ran perfect after new ETM but my V70 had no change in performance and actually got worse until I sold it. This S70 has low miles and I got it for a song because of all the dash lights. I'm a DIY'er but I'm not enjoying this Volvo right about now. Any ideas? Thank you.

The light symptoms match very with with a failing electrical portion of the ignition switch. Try jiggling the key a little bit, does this affect the symptoms?

Many of your lights may also be the result of a bad ABS module.

well, I feel like I've been down this road before. I replaced my ABS module on the V70 along with the MAF & ETM and who knows what else. I'm liking my 92 240 with no radio or AC lately, all I do is put gas, change oil and repeat. Can I pull a used ABS from another Volvo? There's an 99 S80 at the yard that I was hoping to pull the ETM from tomorrow.

If your ABS hasn't been refurbished. You should send it off to Midwest ABS (MVS member: Matty Moo) as soon as you can. And if you can't wait, just have him ship you one and you just mail him yours after

If you have access to a pick n pull, I'd definitely put another ignition switch in there. I'm sure that part is only $10-15 at the junk yard... good luck...

You can open up the ignition switch and inspect the contacts if you are on the road, in a hurry, or cheaper than Scrooge, too.

I spent some time yesterday in the driveway with the car running and messing around with the ignition/keys but no real effect. In fact, just sitting in the driveway doing nothing it would run through different combinations of those CELs. I've noticed too that my radio goes in and out from left speaker to right once an awhile and my back speakers are too distorted to use period. Coincidence?

The only real drive ability issues that I face part from seeing those CEL's is the sporadic acceleration/hesitation episodes. Never for any more than 15 seconds at a time and then it's back to driving normal. I haven't experienced any fluctuation when I'm idling at a standstill only when driving, same for the tach.

Hmmmm thought the switch was going to be it for sure. It still clicks fairly solidly between positions, not a mushy feel? So I see the switch was redesigned on 2000 anyway, I'm not sure if they are as flaky as the earlier ones. If that S80 at the yard is a 99 from after the chassis break 29668 (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... ch-8650054) then you could grab the switch form there, I would definitely check that for troubleshooting purposes.

My next thought would be charging system: alternator or bad grounds. Bad alternator doesn't really fit with long term stability you see but still, maybe take it by the auto parts store anyway and ask them to hook up their electrical system analyzer device, it would report issues with the alternator. Check the grounds in the engine bay, too.

yes, still feels pretty good with good clicks felt. I cleaned the ground from the battery to the frame and the one on the alt but was unable to locate the other ground(s). I'm going to pull the B+ terminal wire to see if it's corroded but alt and battery appears normal when connected to my meter.

I've seen on eBay that you can by an ETM TPS sensor that's a contactless, anyone have good results replacing just this? It's a fraction of the ETM price from Xemodex for a rebuilt ETM. Even a fairly new yellow sticker ETM is about $160.

Yeah, Rspi did a review of it. It takes a little bit of work. But if you have the time, for sure, go for it!

I think this is the seller, I saved this stuff when I thought I was going to get a 99+ P80
