that's an innovation at that time. now, some refrigerators can be connected to the internet

That would have been a tube-based radio, which takes up some space, and generates heat, which most likely, is the reason for its placement on top side of refrigerator.

Someone I know who Cooks at home, full meals, has a sound box on top of fridge, with smartphone plugged into it.

Hence, this idea was relevant then, and even now, if a person prepares "real meals" at home. With a Bose Wave® radio IV, this would be ideal for cooking.

Nowadays, you are able to embed anything you want in your refrigerator. There are no restrictions ;D
