Dolby mode is pro-logic born from the analog era which should extract non dolby encoded stereo sources into 3 channels (FL,C,FR) but send little if anything to the rear. 3 channel mode is similar to pro logic but doesn't try to decode out of phase L-R content to the rear, but instead mirrors FL/FR to RL/RR speakers.

I disagree about the 650. So long as it's functional the HU sound wise isn't bad. It's the lower end speakers bundled with that setup that experience breakup at modest volume. It gets worse with age: the foam surround as it ages lifts the cone up several mm and the voice coil no longer sits properly aligned between the N/S polarity regions of the magnet with sound quality becoming 'shallow' and breaks up with deep bass at even low volume. When these were new they probably sounded ok.

I have read that the 603 sounds better than the 650 and the 813 sounds better than the 850. Of course, the 8xx series sounds better than the 6xx series. I had the 603 and I think it's quite a good audio for an original equipment. Interestingly, when I upgraded to 813+amp, I also upgraded to the premium speakers front and rear, including the upgraded tweeters and the center speaker. I was disappoint by the premium speakers: at low to medium volume, the base speakers have more oomph and low frequencies. There is no doubt the premium speakers sound much better at the highest volumes, but I never pump the radio to such levels. Now I have the 813 with center speaker and premium tweeters along with the base door and rear speakers.

It's 613 and 803 and they do sound better, more bass and more presence
