2000 V70 NA 5 speed auto trans oil?

Post by scot850 »

I am doing a drain and fill on the 2000 V70 NA 5 speed auto trans as part of a stage 0 having also pulled the RH axle for repair.

From what I read, JWS3309 trans oil is the same as Toyota T-IV, Mobil 3309. I know there are others out there but any preferences? I'm ok with either of these choices as they are available locally, and they have to be better than the black goop that came out. I will be doing 3-4 drain and fills over the first few months of running the car.

I believe I have read that Mobil 1 synthetic is no longer compatible with this trans, but I thought I read Mobil 3309 was a synthetic, but can't find anything that backs that up.

I don't plan to go crazy with any Royal Purple or other exotic brands, so suggestions? I know you can buy Aisin 3309 trans oil on line and I believe IPD sells it also. Anyone else used that oil and are happy with it?

Thanks,

Neil.

I could've sworn I read somewhere that Mobil 3309 wasn't a synthetic... (either at a BITOG post or some Mini Cooper forum post). There aren't too many 3309-spec'd oils out there so the pickings are slim.

The same transmission fluid is used in my Brother's Mini (R56) Cooper. Mini folk swear by the dealer 3309 the way some of us swear by our blue coolant... I'd check to see if the Mini stuff is cheaper somewhere.

3309 is a mineral oil, NOT a synthetic.
You can buy a case on Amazon and if you have Prime, with free shipping, it's a great deal
That or the Toyota fluid is the only fluid you should use.
I would not do drain and fills but a complete fluid change using the entire case by using the Gibbons method (Google it)

Thanks guys for the help.

JRL, what you wrote ties up great what I have read elsewhere.

I only plan to one drain and fill and then do the normal cooler line removal flush in a few hundred miles once the car has bedded in and I know all is good otherwise.

Toyota oil is usually fairly good and a dealer is near by. Mobil 3309 is the only other choice than the Aisin oil on line. I might look at that as an option for the full flush.

Thanks for the help.

I'm going with the Toyota T-IV oil as it is local to me and I got 12 liters for under $100 CDN (about $75 US) which is a good price.

Now just have to get the axle carrier bearing and replace it somehow!

The carrier bearing is part of the axle and I don't know of a way to DIY change it out.

I believe it is removable, but with the right tools. I spoke to the foreman at Volvo (been with Volvo since '75) and he thinks they can remove it with a tool they have. Like you I am not sure of that but worth a try! If they sell a bearing for the older 98 axle I'm not sure what the difference is to remove it from a 98 v's 00? 98 has a retaining collar, and 00 does not.

As it is I have to find a solution as so far I can't find a good used RH axle for a 2000 V70 base 5-speed auto. Only option so far is an FEQ branded China part.

Thanks for that wonderful offer my friend. I called them and they say they have one for $125 US and $45 US shipping which is cheaper than it would have cost me from Chapman Motors out west on Vancouver Island who are my usual go to guys. Not cheap but always supply excellent parts. So assuming I have not been scammed (don't think so) I hope to see an axle next week sometime which is when I hope to need to install it.

Thanks again for the generous offer.
