Metallic "Clunk" when rolling from a stop (99 S70 T5M)

Post by Levinicus »

1999 S70 T5 manual. Just started today. When I set off in 1st gear after turning the car on, there is a metallic sounding "clunk" from the front of the car. It happens around 2000 RPM, and only the first time setting off after the car is turned on. If I come to a full stop and accelerate again, it doesn't happen. There is stuff going on with the clutch/flywheel as of a few weeks ago (I think the dual mass flywheel has play in the bearing), but the clunk noise just started today. Any ideas what it could be?

Does it happen right at 12 MPH? Because that would be the ABS selt-test. It only does it once after the car is started.

Wait, for real? I just fixed the abs/stc module. Yes, it happens right around 12 I think... I'll have to test it.

Haha, yup! If your ABS was broken that's probably why the sound seems new to you. It's almost exactly like you described.. sort of a metallic crunching noise that lasts half a second. Sometimes you can feel a little vibration as it does it. Perfectly normal! Sounds like to me that you fixed your ABS.
