Lug Nuts too tight

Lug Nuts too tight

So.... Was working on my brakes on my 850 today. After spending WAAAY too much time on them (Didn't have the right size Allen for the front, and one of my guide pins in the back wasn't cooperating), I went to finish with the back right tire. Lug nuts are on there WAY to tight. Tried some blaster, a breaker bar, and an pipe extension with a four-way. Only thing I did was twist the four way.

I'm currently thinking my only option is to take it somewhere and ask them if they can get the tire off, or at least loosen the lug nuts. Anything I can do at home before I go that route?

Oh, and as a side note, if you're ever working on the rear brakes of an 850, and those guide pins aren't coming quite so easily, one option is to chisel them into a couple pieces and replace them. AutoZone sells two-packs of the guide pins for $2.99

Good thing you didn't get a flat.
Take it to the tire place that did them in the first place and ask them if that's how tight they always do it. Lucky if your rotor is not warped because of it.

3' cheater with the 3/4" breaker bar and an impact grade socket. Bust 'er loose!

Any shop can break it loose, that's by far the easiest way to go.

You will so rarely run into this problem, especially if doing more repairs yourself now, I would not invest in any special tools just to break loose stuck lugs.

+1 to what the guys say. Take it to a tire shop (ideally the one that fitted them last), punch the idiot that did it (joking of course!), and ask them to undo it and suggest if they have caused any damage you may seek restitution! I have an electric impact driver for this reason and it has saved me several times. Sure I have a 3/4" breaker bar and all that, but the electric wrench is way easier and I think is less likely to break the bolts as it kind of vibrates it loose rather than constant torque of a break bar wrench and socket.

When they are on that tight, it may only be an impact gun that may shift it. If it is an alloy rim, check it front and back near the bolt holes for damage and cracks. There is no reason in this day and age to do stupid stuff like this, but way too many sloppy 'pros' out there as I am finding.

Ended up taking it to a different shop. Had the tire done at Wal-Mart a year or two ago (I know, I know, but a $50 tire brand new is nice when you're young and broke). They were backed up with about an hour or two wait, and the shop next door said they'd do it for $10 and be done in about that many minutes.

Now I've got a REALLY cool issue. Got my brakes done, etc. and I've got a new noise coming from that tire. Sounds like maybe something is catching once per rotation. I'm thinking it might be a spot on the brake pad, or something similar. I'll give it a week and check it out. Any ideas?

I once had a shop undo the lugs on a new purchase with a ... 6ft breaker bar. And they hand trouble with that :shock: Those were however plain steel wheels.

Had a youngin epoxy coat there wheels and installed them slightly not dry. After a good year of being installed they ended up needing some work done eventually.

The lugs + epoxy + over tightening = new hub wheel and hardware.
Glad they had money for that expensive lessen!

Now the lug bolts have been removed, maybe it is worth jacking it up and having another look as you can get the wheel off it may be easier to identify the source.
