98 S70 N/A 5-Speed, 900 mile weekend drive...

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

Did a drive up to Montreal for a wedding this weekend. Then drove down to the Jerse and then back into Queens...

This was our first trip, post-airbox mod, 89 Octane all the way, one tank with 4 oz of Lucas...I also got an alignment the morning before the trip after swapping out the control arms and changing the sway end links.

We averaged around 28 mpg... hit speeds of up to 85mph. (But kept the car mostly around 70mph the whole drive). For all you N/A folk out there, if you haven't gotten around to doing the airbox mod, what are you waiting for??? Our car now has pep at 65mph+!!! I'm not going to lie, if boost feels anything like this, I might be sold...

Nice! Our weekend jaunt was only 800 miles, roundtrip to Chicago in the V70. Also averaged 28 mpg for the trip (28.5 out, 27.5 back), also speeds up to 85. But no airbox mod above 60, just a 15g. :)

If I could just figure out how to install that fifth pedal ...

I like these P80 long distance drives!! :-)

I wonder if my "poor gas mileage" has to do with the P0133 code that popped up three times...

My flex pipe is busted and my cat is oozing stuff. I can't seem to pull the trigger on a $600 manifold, cat, muffler replacement job...

Leaking flex pipe can influence the O2 reading. But it's not a huge job being a non turbo. Just remove the 4 bolts at the manifold - and replace them while there, undo the 4 bolts after the cat converter, then cut the old flex out and weld a new flex in. Harder part is to place the new flex in the exact position - some places have a support to immobilize all the pipe before cutting it. Also to know the exact size of the flex. I like the interlock type - not the right size

A 5 speed manual should average over 30 MPG on the highway

I would definitely replace just the flex if that was the only part of the exhaust that needed replacing... My flex is leaking. But I'm also leaking before and after the cat and my muffler is on its way out, too. The car needs a new exhaust for sure. I'm wondering if I should just pick up a $100 cat and a $100 welder and $100 in pipes, etc and just go for it... That's half the price, no?

I know. I know... I was getting 30mpg, but that was only when I kept it at 60mph. Imagine what it was like before the airbox mod and before I installed the front scoop! I need to do something about my exhaust...
