DIY: CV Joint Removal Tool anyone?

Post by cn90 »

This CV Joint Removal Tool used to cost $100 or so.
Now it is $20 on ebay with FREE shipping!

If you go to ebay and youtube and enter search terms "CV Joint Tool", you will see it.
This tool makes CV Joint work painless, no need for Vise, hammer, punch etc.
Of course you still have to spread the "C-clip" but that is all you have to do.

There are a bunch of these to choose from on eBay but choose carefully, make sure to get the tool that specifies the inner diameter is 100 mm, like the one cn90 showed a pic of.

Some ads say 100 mm, some say 95 mm, some don't say anything. Given that the turbo outer CV has 92 mm diameter, the 100 mm tool might be the best choice.

I'm easily confused, so do you not have to open up the retaining clip with this tool or do they just forget to mention this in the video? I'm also assuming this to is to prevent the need to hammer the outer joint to remove it and also allow the job to be done without actually removing the axle from the car?

Good idea. I've always separated the inner joint, because it is easy just time consuming bending out the sheet metal skin.

I had a humorous exchange with one of the ebay sellers:

I asked if the internal diameter was 100mm on the puller being sold, he quickly replied & said no, sorry- he measured it to 9.99cm.

I bought it.

Ha,

Once you receive the tool, could you post a photo with measurements (just to confirm what they say) and also the name of the ebay seller?
Thanks!

Will do, it's being shipped from NorCal, so I should have it shortly. I'll post up a pic with measurements.
