Yeah, I thought you had missed that, so didn't push. That exactly what I feared.
I'm not sure where the bad actors are, inside UPS or the brokers they use

I often buy parts from eEuroparts.com
They have an excellent shipping option to Canada, you pay for them to ship it to their warehouse in Canada, then they ship it from there to your house.
It's usually around 50$ Canadian for shipping. Maybe try them next time?

The part is a used part that is $800 from Volvo and suppliers. For new parts I mostly use FCP Euro and shipping takes mostly 2 days to Calgary and costs from $50 upwards which covers all handling and taxes. UPS are only dicks about ground shipments for some reason.
Thanks for the heads up on e-Europarts shipping, good to know.
Abscate, I knew there would be some charges, but it has been a long time since I used UPS other than with FCP which has been great. They are way cheaper than USPS who have become stupid expensive in the last year.

It's been a while since I got the dreaded UPS extra charges- my favorite was they tried to hit me up for this on an item that was shipped to me as a warranty repair item with a value of zero- their collection department from Nova Scotia was calling me at 830- their time 530 mine to get their pound of flesh

Got to love stupidity! Today went to PnP. Salt in the wound is they just got in an identical car to the 2000 V70 base I am working on. Pulled both axles for $35 each! Interestingly the carrier bearing sounds the same as the one on my car, so I am now wondering if that is how they are, or do they all go bad? I guess I will find out on Monday when the Erie Vo-Vo part gets in! Car also had an almost new pair of front aftermarket control arms. Ball joints are goo, as are bushes. Even the black paint is perfect! For $25 CDN (about $18 US) each they are worth it as spares. After the carry on with the front brake caliper I also pulled the RH front caliper (LH was poor condition) which has an almost new piston. Probably a re-man'd part (weird slider pins with Torx heads) but the piston and boot are good and the piston moves nicely.

And the never ending bad luck continues with this car! Axle arrived today from Erie Vo-Vo. Opened the box to find axle grease covering the outer CV boot!
Took pictures and sent to them. I think this is the 'careful' handling UPS uses may have caused this. At first I could not see where the grease had come from, but then realised it was localised mostly. Cleaned the grease off and found a small split in the outer edge near the first corrugation. Amazing this small split had allowed so much grease to escape. Probably didn't help UPS stored delivered it with the outer boot down with the box on it's end.
I've sent a note to Erie and see what they suggest. The inner boot and carrier bearing seem fine, so I could fit the boot I bought to repair the original before finding the noisy carrier bearing. Man this car pisses me off now! If it wasn't for bad luck, there would be no luck with it!!
Back to the pain that is the project tomorrow and at least fit new plugs and re-fit the original coils for now. I will look into used option coils as spares to replace the ones used on the 'R'.

So the cost of a replacement boot will be $90-100 CDN (around $70 US) if I use GKN Lobro from FCP after shipping or buy an OE from Volvo! I have got a better deal from Swedish Auto Parts when shipped with the coil packs which will work out around $40 US. Erie Vo-vo did not have another axle to supply so they have discounted the axle by $40 to cover the boot, but not my time spent finding one. All that was available locally was Empi or Volvo OE at $100 CDN. Ouch!
Luckily I have a new one for the axle I had planned to re-build until I found the carrier bearing was goosed so I will use that one for now. I still plan to try to replace the bearing and if it works out sell the axle to re-coupe some of the cost.
