Doesn't matter, it's just a heavier V70 GLT at that point. Guy who bought my '98 V70 AWD destroyed the angle gear 3000 miles later by driving 70 miles on a donut... yanked the driveshaft and all is well.
I'd say probably 75% of the 97-03 AWD's are FWD by now, the majority of those being the 97-00 P80's.

Holy cow I did the same thing, drove 80 miles on a donut,,,,had no choice. Is the angle gear part of the drive shat?
I do want to fix it before next winter.

Angle gear is what the front of the prop-shaft bolts to, at the rear of the prop-shaft is the viscous coupling (VC) clutch. I'm sure that somewhere in the owners handbook there will be info on how to drive the car on a donut and how far you can and how FAST. The biggest issue is people thing the donut means they can drive at normal speeds. The system does not do well with different sized tires or even different brands particularly on the same axle.

Is the rolling diameter for the donut different to the regular tire/rim?

Yes, the donut is VERY small compared to the regular wheel, the wheel itself is only something like 12 inches. Most of these cars only came with the space saver donuts rather than a full size spare.

From Vida, the spare 'donut wheel is actually 115/70/15 tire size. The is also a 17" option listed on Ebay for 98-00 (possibly wrong). So, before we consign the donut wheel to the bin, we need to make sure if the one fitted to the OP V70 XC actually has a different rolling diameter to the regular wheel. Volvo does lots of stupid stuff, but if they know the wheel diameter is important to prevent damage to the AWD system, you would think the diameters would at least match?

It is 15? Hmm... interesting. Still, a 115/70/15 is small for a car running 16 or 17 inch wheels (although the XC/AWDs may have 15s standard, not sure). Regardless, it's a very small wheel. Volvo really should have provided a full size spare for AWD models so you don't risk destroying the AWD.

my 98 V70XC had 15" wheels as standard, and I believe the AWD did too. The 'R' came with 16" I believe as standard. I run 17" wheels but rolling diameter is the same as the 16". I will check the tire diameter when I get a chance of the donut.
