Winter Wheels/Tires

Post by zombielinux »

So I'm planning on taking a trek in to the great white north this (upcoming) winter with our '07 XC70.

I was torn between getting winter tires on my current rims before heading out, then swapping back upon return. OR getting different rims and swapping a whole wheelset.

There's someone selling 20 hole 2001 S80 rims with the same rim size as my stock ones on my local classifieds (reasonable deal too).

Worth it just to have kicking around rather than paying to mount/unmount tires (potentially repeatedly?)

Great white north as in Alaska? Georgia is in south US if I'm right? You will probably be driving on winter tires for a long distance in warm weather which is not the safest option for emergency handling/braking, plus they will wear. I don't know if this is feasible, but I would rather drive to Canada and purchase some winter tires here and have them installed at a garage. You may even strike a deal to leave there your summer tires for storage and have them buy back the winter tires when you return.

If not, I don't think it's worth purchasing a set of wheels, just getting the winter tires on your actual wheels then have them removed once back home will only be an extra $100 or so. Not worth the hassle and risk of buying used wheels of unknown condition. Here in Canada we do have two sets of wheels and tires but we swap them every year so then it's worth it.

Well in this case, its going to be upstate new York, and the weather down here at that time of year can be down in the 40s-50s and only gets colder as I drive north.

The wheels themselves are ~$100 for the set.
