New owner (V70 T5): a few questions re: model compatibility

Post by GoldCO »

Recently picked up an '05 V70 T5 for a decent price because it needed some work... fully loaded, 150K miles.

So far:
  • replaced 6 bulbs (daytime running lamps were a bit of a chore)
  • installed (missing) shifter release button
  • installed new control arm bushings (thanks to help from this board)... hope to never have to do that again! ;)
  • front-end alignment
  • 2 new tires (see below)*
  • oil change
  • purchased (but haven't gotten around to just yet): new plugs, air filter, cabin air filter
Questions, in no particular order:
  • Car is missing the engine splash guard -- what other models/years might share this so I can head to local U-Pull-n-Save?
  • Also missing the fog lamps (receptacles and bulbs there, but no assemblies): again, other models/years that might share these?
  • What is the trick for removing lower door/body trim? I've got one piece which was just held on by the white removable clips, but the molded clips at either end were broken: when I tried removing same piece from junkyard car, it broke in same spots as it was pulled away. :(
  • The driver window seems temperamental: when it's down and I pull up switch, it goes all the way up, then all the way back down... so I have to 'nudge' it up little by little to the top. Is there a trick?
  • Tranny service: thought it would be a good idea to flush and fill -- when I inquired at one shop they said that if the car has more than 150K miles and it has never been done before it might be best to not do it now. ??? Is this an import/Volvo thing, or are these guys misguided?
  • *So, the rear tires on this car were really bad and unevenly worn... I did have a "pre-sale inspection" done (not a very good one in hindsight) and was told that it was due to the control arm bushings up front and that the tires had been rotated (which made some sense to me). However, when I took it in for the alignment after new bushings, the (different) shop pointed out to me that the driver rear "lateral arm" (or trailing arm?) was significantly bent, causing the thrust angle to be waaaay off. It doesn't appear to me to be too bad of a job from my quick look, so same question as above: any other models/years share that same suspension component?
Looking forward to getting this car on the road... has some decent 'pep' for a 5-banger. 8)

Thanks in advance.

one more:
turns out that air filter i bought ain't quite the right shape... ;)
both NAPA and autozone show a regular rectangular air filter, but alas, this one is cylindrical. is this a dealer-only thing?

Many of us don't bother with splash guards, we're rebels.
Window switches are 2 position, first click is manual, 2nd click is auto open/close.

Ha!!!! I know this one!!

The window is a common problem. Verrrrrrrry annoying.

You need to reset the window travel in VIDA. It doesn't know where up ends, so it thinks someone is in the window and opens it. When you nudge it, it doesn't do it auto... Therefore no safety.

Get a VIDA/Dice combo (you'll want it eventually... Mines already saved me 3x what it cost in dealer trips), or with someone who has one, and its a 2minute fix.

Cheers!!

Definitely flush the tranny. These Aisin units like fresh oil. You can do the drain and fill procedure but it's difficult to fully flush the torque converter. I recommend pulling an oil cooling line at the radiator, and pumping out 4 liters of fluid at a time (refilling with exact amount drained). You'll need a full case of JWS-3309 oil to do this properly. Make sure it's JWS-3309 and not anything else. You can get it at the dealer of course, or at your local toyota dealer, there it's called Type-4 ATF. This is easily a one man job, start and idle the car the oil pumps out slow enough to capture. Don't forget to replace the o-ring and clip on the tranny cooler line when you're done.

Window can be reprogrammed with VIDA/DICE or there's supposedly a way by pulling a fuse with key in position 2 while holding the window switch. Search this site, I found a description at one point. I have the same issue on my car, but just live with it. I pull and hold the switch, and continue holding for a few seconds after the window has closed, it will stay closed.

I also am missing a splash guard, can't find one locally. Can get them from IPD. Click the link on this site to support MVS. My engine compartment is extremely dusty and won't stay clean, I'm tempted to buy one. Check compatibility on IPD website.

Rear tire uneven wear is almost always associated with rear suspension alignment issue, which is a rare occurrence on it's own. Makes sense the shop would point out a bent component. Any 2001-2009 S60 or V70 should have the same parts. Use reputable parts like Lemforder or OEM.
