I went to the pull-a-part after work today and snagged 2 02 sensors off of '99's just like mine as well as a passenger side kick panel.
Came home (and it was easy!), replaced the faulty 02 with the junk yard one and my check engine light is now out- no codes now! Runs great!!
I have a $75 eBay one on it's way so hopefully this one I got today will stay working- then I'll send the eBay one back for a refund. Btw, I had no issue breaking the one in the junk yard out or mine...no BP Blaster..just the right socket and long 2 1/2 foot bar... I'll put in the kick panel tomorrow and clean it up some...then it's just the clanky end link and then paint and it's set to go! No gotcha's so far!!

Nice!
I'm surprised it came out so easily! My cousin and I were trying to get his sensor out again yesterday... it will not budge! It's stripped and the o2 sensor socket won't grip it anymore. Vise grips won't fit in the space, now my next idea is to cut the wire and slip a box end 22mm over it. Otherwise, I'm going to go all out and cut the thing off and find a 22mm bolt extractor. Never dealt with such a seized O2 sensor!

Wow! That's crazy. The 02's I got out of S70's in the junk yard already had their CATs cut out of them so when I put the socket on the front sensor the entire exhaust section wobbled and I thought I was in for it not getting these out but I had no problems- I guess I was just lucky!bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑03 May 2017, 07:10 Nice!

You want a heavy six point impact type socket...I could send you mine which worked wonders on the Bimmer.bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑03 May 2017, 07:10 Nice!

I have one, but my only worry is that I won't be able to fit that in there.abscate wrote: ↑04 May 2017, 05:19You want a heavy six point impact type socket...I could send you mine which worked wonders on the Bimmer.bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑03 May 2017, 07:10 Nice!

Haha, the top O2 sensors on our BMW are not bad, but we haven't had to change the downstream *knock on wood*.

Update: The junk yard O2 sensor worked until the next morning...on backing out of the driveway the CEL was back on. I probed it and it's the front 02 again...thought I had solved the problem. Then I stopped for gas...I was low and it still had the gas in it from when I bought this car... Low and behold, resetting the light and driving off and the CEL was off again and I drove all the way home about 8 miles without the CEL coming back on. I thought that it was just bad gas! Then this morning, on start-up the CEL came back on. I reset the light and clear the codes and drove to work without the CEL back on. After work, I restart the car and the CEL appears again...same 02 code. Reset and drive home without the CEL all the way (about 10 miles). So, I'm thinking it's not the 02 after all...I have checked for vacuum leaks. I don't get a MAF code.
So, if I reset the code after it's set, it stays off but once I stop the car and turn the car off, it comes back on shortly after I restart the car.
What should I be looking for? Or....do I truly just have a weak 02 sensor? I have a new one in a box that arrived today but don't even want to open it and get it out of the box if this isn't the issue. Btw, there are absolutely no driveability issues. The only odd thing that happens is when I come to a stop at a light the rpms dip slightly and recover...this happens every time at full stop when the CEL is on or not.

What code are you getting to trip the CEL.

O2 and other emission system checks go through cycles. The computer is smart and it will not report bad until it's 2nd or 3rd cycle. I never consider o2 issues resolved until I put at least 400 miles on the vehicle.

Thanks guys...it's the P0135 each and every time.
There was one instance when I was able to read real time settings in the car (not sure why I was able to do that) and it said all systems were fine except a fuel system failure- open loop. There wasn't a code for that but I thought maybe that's what caused the front 02 (P0135) code to be set..once that code sets then the CEL comes on. So, I'm thinking it's not actually the 02 sensor that's bad but its the sensor's inability to deal with some kind of malfunction... of course, air/fuel will be off when/if it's not functioning so therefore probably an "open loop" for fuel system too... I don't know. One thing I haven't done is look at the fuel filter. Probably a good thing to change anyway...and in talking with rspi, probably clean the throttle body. The new gas did do something though, although it didn't really solve whatever problem this car is having.

Just for kicks, maybe since I changed out the front sensor I need to unplug the battery to reset the adaptives?
