remove engine only? (manual trans)

Post by Flystagg »

currently in the middle of pulling my engine to change, clutch, sump o rings and other stuff.

Can you remove just the engine and leave the manual gearbox in the car? Saw this was possible with an auto by unbolting the flex plate but is there enough room to clear the pressure plate on a clutch?

You may also try asking on http://volvoforums.org.uk/, they are more used with manual transmissions and with the infamous slave cylinder failure

No chances

Not just possible, but this is the most reasonable way.

Think of it as a "cleaning opportunity"!

You need not to dismantle all front suspention, and wheel alignment will not be changed. Here is the easiest sequence:
1. Drain oil from gearbox.
2. Unscrew axle nuts (or bolts on later models).
3. Raise car and remove wheels. Use an additional stands, never trust a jack!
4. Remove bolt which blocking ball joint with hub. Disconnect control arm from the hub.
Now you will have enough room to pull out drive shafts from hubs and completely remove them. Do not forget to remove cover from bearing at right side shaft.
P.S. We are talking about P80 with M56, I guess...

Engine/trans can come out from the top just fine. No need to remove any suspension parts.

I have pulled just the transmission from the bottom to change the clutch. It wasn't a picnic but it can be done and I had the flywheel surfaced and replaced the RMS at the same time. You can change the sump O rings without removing the engine but that is a bit if a battle as well. If you come out the top with both of them all you need to remove from below is the axles, the rack and the suspension stay as is.
