1996 850 Turbo - Throttle Position Sensor
Does anyone know if replacing the Throttle Position Sensor is something that can be done without the help of a mechanic? If so, what's involved?
It is an easy and simple job that you can do yourself. Correct way to do it is to remove the throttle body, use the oportunity to clean it as well as the idle control valve. The TPS is held to the TB by two screws only. You will also need to use a new throttle body gasket when you put everything back together. Everything will take one hour to do.

yeah, i might have to try myself. local volvo dealer just quoted me $400 to replace the part. $160 for the genuine part, $211 for "labor/programming" -- which seems a bit excessive. (for the record i've never take this car to a dealer, but my usual mechanic is away for the month and I need this taken care.)
so generally, am I right in thinking $400 is a bit much for this repair?

Download the free service manual for the 850 that is in the pinned section. If you really want to buy a repair manual, buy the Haynes- you can find it at most auto parts stores now.

Just replaced my TPS. Took an hour because I literally had to do it one handed, holding the flashlight. Didn't even know where it was, just looked at the OEM replacement part, knew it was 'somewhere' under/around the throttle body, and found it. Easy to replace, just take your time. If I was in a race I could do it in 15 min now (with sunlight).
Did not use new Throttle body gasket, didn't see where that would go in my travels... probably because I didn't drop the TB, just the hoses nearby.
This will hopefully address my cold start idles too low issue

To anyone with cold starting issues,
I had cold starting issues with my 1997 850 for the longest. It seemed that as soon as the temperature got under 07 degrees Celsius it would take literally twenty cranks to start the car and sometimes the battery would die before I could start the car. Anyways, I read a beautiful thread regarding fuel relays and how the start to go bad after ten years+/they become temperature sensitive. As soon as I read the thread I knew this was exactly what it was. I went to the junk yard and paid a little of nothing for it. By the way, I tried everything but this at first. I couldn't believe that I had overlooked this. Let this be the first thing you try to resolve this issue.
