Wood Grain dash kits

Post by SonicAdventure »

Hey everyone, had a question about aftermarket dash decal kits. I've seen many P80s in the junk yard with various dash kits. I know some of the kits are factory, i.e. The entire radio and AC surround is a different plastic along with the glove box piece and shift knob. But I've also seen these aftermarket kits on eBay that do everything including the areas around the air vents. The pictures look nice and they really aren't too expensive.

I had a 99 Honda Accord with factory wood grain appliqué and even though it was kinda faded, it looked better than the black matte plastic. My car looks OK inside, but the grey trim is so scratched up in some places that something to dress it up a little is something I have considered. It's not in the budget now, but I wanted to do some research and see if anyone here has ever had any luck with this and if so (or if not) what products did you use? If you feel like it please post pictures. Personally I saw a 99 V70 on CL in my area that had kind of a medium brown burl walnut overlay that looked really classy with the tan interior. If the price was right, I think a dark blackish wood grain trim kit would go nicely with my grey interior. I know they make them because I have seen them.

Let me know your thoughts. This is something that is pretty far down the road at this point, but I'd like to know my options. Thanks

Hey Sonic,
You referring to a kit like this?

I wonder what it'd look like... I hope we get some input here!

Yeah something like that. Something that sticks on with double side tape and will have a little bit of a sheen to it.

For $40, I might give the wood trim a try... But I doubt they'd stick for very long...

I don't know if these are stickers, but whatever you do, don't do red...

Anything like these "kits" that I've ever seen looked cheap, sleazy and ill fitting.
They all look to me like surface add-ons that are obviously JC Whitney grade crap.
I'm thinking that there are many better things for you to spend money on that
will give you a lot more long term satisfaction. Stage 0 Everything FTW! ;)

sticker dash trim kits are personal choice... some hate them... some like them.

I thought about buying the cheapy stuff from ebay... maybe aluminum looking ones. to match my (soon to be installed) R aluminum trim. Good thing is I got a black upper dash cover from the junkyard... and the vent covers were included. So I figure I would try on my spare set and see how they look. Scuff them up a bit and use some 3M spray adhesive for extra hold.

I have an almost full set of wood grained Volvo interior if anyone wants it. Bought it to fit to the 'R' but decided against it. I have the center console, the center section around the radio, the glove box lid, and gear shift. Don't have the steering wheel though as all I have found so far have been chipped or badly scraped.

Are you talking about the OEM components with the wood grain or an OEM appliqué set? Yes I'm very interested...what are you looking to get for it? PM me thanks!

He SAID a Volvo kit which do not glue on and in fact the center piece is quite a daunting experience trying to install it, half the dash has to come apart!!
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

JRL is correct. The Volvo parts are not applique. He is also correct that the centre piece around the radio is tricky to fit without removing the dash. Having said that I managed to remove it without damage without removing the dash, but it is fiddly. I also forgot 2 things (I found a couple of pictures of a couple of pieces). I forgot about the center piece at the rear of the center console between the front seats, and there is some scratches to the center console section under the parking brake lever area. Pictures below:

I will have to find the glove box door, center dash section and gear shift (Auto with no cracks to the shifter). It may take me a couple of days to find them and I'll take pictures and add them.

Remember, the glove box door has the key lock in it so if you have the same color of door, you will either have to remove the wood section and transfer to yours, or change the lock portion over to the replacement one. I don't have the key.

Below is a picture of my current project which has the oak/taupe/arena interior but the wood sections are the same and you can see where they all fit with the exception of the middle rear part in the picture above. These are not the parts being supplied as they are staying in the project V70!

It is hard to see the section around the radio, but this is the only picture I had to hand.

Neil.
