P1670 Immobilser error

Post by scot850 »

Finally got the 2000 V70 NA base back together and did a trial start. Car ran like crap, surging/stalling and threw a bunch of codes. Cleared all the codes and kept getting an error for the 'B' coil pack. Today removed and re-sat the #2 cylinder coil pack and now the engine runs smoothly and revs cleaning at idle, but after a short time (15 secs or so) the engine warning light keeps coming back on and giving a P1670 immobiliser error. Re-set it and same thing happens each time. No idea what is the cause of this (I have not used Dice yet) as I am not sure what could be causing this or where to start. I know I have had issues with P80's in the past with disconnecting and re-connecting the battery preventing the car starting, but usually I get a warning with the side-lights/turn signals flashing. The fix is manually locking and in-locking the drivers door lock with the key, but this does not work for this. Only things I can think of that I would have been near when working on the car is removing the dash top to replace the speedo bulbs, but car ran fine after that with no issues or warnings. Only other thing I can think of is the connector for the LH hood lock mechanism if I caused this to fail when cleaning around the headlights when they were out to get the hood to in-latch correctly. Again, the original adjustment of the lock was done prior to turning the car around in the garage but no code was thrown after that.

Strange thing is that last night when it was throwing the coil error, this error did not come on so what could have changed? Low battery maybe? I will try charging it to see if that makes a difference while hopefully getting some feed back from those who may know where to look for this issue.

Thanks,

Neil.

Well, while I was waiting I decided to try 2 things. First try the other key in case the key was bad (as happened with our 06 XC70) but as they key only has the chip it was not something I thought was an issue but worth trying. Nope, same issue.

Decided to remove the antenna ring and see if the contacts were bad. This is what I found:
Antenna ring crack-damage
Antenna ring crack-damage
antenna ring damage (2)
antenna ring damage (2)
Do you think the crack and shattered body of the antenna ring 'might' be the issue? Even the clip holding it on is split. Another $80 out of the bank account! Like all the other things that the PO broke on this car that I have never seen broken on a P80, this is another one where you go, " How in the name of creation (I use more colorful engineering words) do you manage to break one of these???" Question now is why is it flaking out now, is it just to piss me off?

There was a CEL on when bought, but it was believed to be related to the flashing orange arrow of death from the tranny. The dealer checked it as I thought it was the PnP switch and it will set of the engine light too. My Dice unit would not talk to the tranny/TCU so took it to the dealer. Mechanic found a non-communication issue with the TCU related to oxidation on the contacts of the TCU and ECU. Cleaned the contacts with Wurth contact cleaner and a cotton bud. Refitted and switched off the CEL's and all was good and has been on the only 2 journeys since then. The car has mostly been in bits for the last 5 months, but when I started it up to turn it around in the garage it was fine. It was only after trying to start it yesterday this started. It could have happened before but as the mechanic had re-set everything I have no idea if it was there before.

I saw your note abscate. I have ordered a new one as I have to get this car out of the garage to give me room to swap 3 cars worth of winter tires off!

Appreciate the help guys!

Fitted the new antenna ring this afternoon, re-set the check light and started the car up. Within 5 secs the check-light came back on. Same freekin' error code P01670!!!

Re-set it again and restarted. 5 secs and the light is on again. Switch off and walk away to find the fuel can and matches!!!!

Calm down and check the fault code and it is not the P01670, but pack to P0352 B coil primary/secondary coil error. What!!???!

Pull #2 coil and swap #1 with it and issue moves to coil #1 position. Swap in another new coil and now all lights are off for now. In-believable, and new Volvo coil is bad out the box!

Now have to hope they stay out!

Two intermittent, unrelated faults occurring during diagnostics. Ugh. That will lead to premature hair loss. It's wisdom of age to walk away and regroup when this happens.

Intermittent coil pack fault sounds like a wiring/grounding issue. I get the impression issues often surface when the CP harness in that area has been disturbed. In my opinion those ground ring terminals needed to be soldered at the factory as they're in a very hot location -and- subject to contamination with any sort of oil leak on the top side of the engine, or even accidental spillage when adding oil. Mine ran noticeably smoother/better when I addressed this even though I wasn't getting a fault/CEL.

mrbrian200 -- When you are talking about the ground rings being soldered, are you talking about the 2 ground wire rings that ate part of the coil pack harness as the top of the head between the coil packs? Are you saying you soldered them, or did you remove the crimps, clean and then solder them?

I have not finished working on the car by a long way and I'm starting on a 'Round-2 list' for when I have the car on the road, I will then accumulate any other issues and then take a 2nd fix-up. I already have the LH axle and axle seal, a 2nd drain and fill of the transmission, a 2nd oil and filter change (used dino oil 1st time but will switch to synthetic 5W-40 next time). So as you can see the list is already growing. Once I am satisfied the car is running well as it should, then I'll address the paint issues on the rear bumper and spoiler, and maybe have the 3-4 small parking dents removed with PDR repairs.

I have spent way too much time and money on this car now to leave it half done. There is still a chance it may get to stay as a back up and the 'R' will go!

Thanks for the replies guys!
