Just want to update this thread.
End result is the vehicle required a replacement transmission. Big thanks to JRL who was instrumental in coordinating transmission swap with a gently used trans from Erie Volvo. JRL went out of his way to make sure the job was done right. I appreciate him stepping up.
So far all seems to be working as it should. Thanks again for ever ones help.

Also...check the tires & the trans oil. If the tires are significantly different in circumference, or one is very different from the other 3, you'll have some weird & hard shifting. I've bought 2 XC's from dealers, who thought the trannies were bad in both, so they went cheap. First stop: new tires for both. Then change the trans oil. One has 150K+ miles since purchase, the other at least 40K since buying it cheap. The '04 (the one with 150K since I bought it, total of 294K miles) still has a hard shift when it's hot and I let it downshift and then accelerate; but it's been doing that for 150K miles. Someday I'll just have to fix that.

All tire were the same size and brand. all installed at the same time. I was just unlucky. trans was shot.
