I just get a screwdriver behind it and pop it out. Be careful not to put a deep gouge the socket that the seal is installed in or it can cause a leak around the outside edge of the seal. Another technique is to drill a small hole in the edge and run a screw into it and then yank it out with pliers. You are space limited on the inboard seal and it is awkward to get to it which is frustrating since you can see it quite well.

Lee, does a seal puller work on these axle seals? I have always wanted to get one... I'm really a fan of having the right tool for the right job...

I don't think you have enough room to use one on the inboard axle.

+1 on popping the seal out with a screwdriver, or carefully installing a screw if that doesn't work.

Best install tool is a flat, square price of wood. Like 5/8 inch thick cut into a 3 x 3 inch square. Place it over the partially installed seal, tap on it with a 2 lb hammer, this will set the seal *flush with the case* which is how you want it. Works great on either side, driver's or passenger's. Or use a hockey puck if you have one handy, apparently they are also a good diameter. The garter spring is irrelevant as it is inward and does not come into play here.

Hey guys, got the job done today. Thanks all for the fantastic help and advice! Only thing left is to refill the fluid. In the end I had to use a crowbar to remove the seal, the screwdriver way wasn't really happening (but maybe help loosen it,) and only wanted to use the screw method as a last resort. I noted a few things not related to the axle stuff but something that will need to be resolved. While adding the seal I noticed a missing screw a bit above the seal (see link below for screenshot.) My guess is when the clutch was being done they forgot to add that bolt back in. Does anyone know what kind of bolt that is so i can buy a new one?
And again while adding the axle back in I thought I would check the engine mount and could not believe that both bolts were missing!!! I assume that would have also been removed during the clutch job? I bought the mount about a year back and can remember taking forever to align up perfect so i could screw in the bolts, so I know 100% i put them in. It is possible they just came lose and fell out due to not tightening them enough or is it more likely they didn't get added back after the clutch job?

Been a few days now and the car has yet to leak. It looks like problem solved

Also put in new bolts for the lower engine mount. Still to find the the correct bolt for the area just above the axle... but I'll get to that another day.
