Sorry for replying so late. I did manage to remove the gear shift. You cannot install a new boot without removing the gear shift knob. I did not destroy my gear shifter as Volvo recommends. I bought a tool on the internet that someone made specifically for this purpose. It worked perfectly.
Could I get a link for this tool?

Go to Yother DOT com , it will save you a lot of hassle, you will NOT have to cut apart your gear shifter knob, which runs between 70-90$ new I believe. You should send me a check for 50% of that amount  . It actually took a fair amount of searching on google to find it, and I'll be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if the original thread disappears at some point.

Do myself and Matt a favor, when you read this please reply to the thread, I'd like to see if I get an email alert from your reply.

Do you have a writeup on how you did it? I honestly can't visualize how you did it and kept the original knob. I sure would like to see it, I'm a visual learner.

Thank you for the link! Unfortunately I couldn't find anything that looks like it would remove a shift knob on the product list. I sent them an email to see if they can help.

As for emails - no. Never received an email alert when you replied.

EDIT: They got back to me about the tool and they no longer make them :( However he did say he'll have a look and see if they have any left lying around. Fingers crossed.

Good luck. That's a shame if they don't make them anymore. Any machinist could make them, they are very basic in design and work excellently.

I have found a gear shift knob that I want. Can't I just hack saw the stock gear shift knob off and just replace the knob with the aftermarket knob?
