transmission fluid/magnefine filter

Post by tom4342 »

I have heard different stories about changing the fluid one saying you could cause damage doing so, i bought this 98v70 AWD in 2011 with 142k miles it now has almost 170k i do not know the maintenance history on it but have had no issues with the transmission. I read a post in the forum about installing an inline filter so I bought a magnefine filter to install any suggestions on the best location?

I don't know where you put the filter but the expert advice here is to change the fluid with a series of dumping the pan mad replacing the volume. Three drain/fills will pretty much give you new fluid

I've had a Magnefine filter on my trans for years now. Highly recommend. My car has 243K now and I think I installed the first one at aroun 160K. I put it on the return line from the radiator. I opened up my first one and the magnet had picked up a lot of fine metallic grit and the filter was rather dirty. The second one I opened up after about 50K and was far cleaner. I use only Mobil 1 Syn ATF.

If the fluid hasn't been changed or you don't know, I'd reccomend doing what abscate said as a starter.

You wont have the green clip. They started in 99 I think. You will have the silver/rust colored cage clamps that fit over the cooler pipes at the radiator. If you have an auto you may have up to 4 cooler pipes at the radiator. The auto trans has 2 pipes and if you look down the back of the radiator from the front of the car they are on the RHS as you look down the end cap of the radiator. You have to expand the cage with a pair of circlip pliers to remove the cage to be able to remove the pipe. At the age of the car I would recommend fitting a new cage and 'O' -rings on the end of the pipe at the radiator.
