p0016 code after replacing timing belt

Post by vcso_wrench »

Just changed the timing belt on my, 2003 volvo v70 2.4 turbo i-5. The code came on after 30 minutes of running the engine. Replaced the idlers and tensioner and the water pump. I think the problem started when trying to remove the crank pulley. I didnot know that the dampner would come off so easily i used a puller to get the crank pulley off. I then got the pulley off and used a large socket and then tapped the pulley back against the block. I still had thetiming belt on at the time. The new belt went on with no problem. This is got to be the easiest belts to do. Just dont know where to start, to try to fix this problem. This is my 1st volvo. I love this car. I work on so many different types of vehicles. Never had a problem like this after doing a timing belt. If anyone has any ideas. I really could use the help w/ our 1st child on the way in a 10 days. I dont like having the check engine light on. Thanks, vcso_wrench

You probably knocked the timing off a tooth, now you need to find someone who knows how to re time it CORRECTLY

so could be just a matter that i got the vvt cam gear off a little bit. Do you know where i can get a good manuual for this car. Mitchell online doesnt have good images of the timing marks for this engine. I think that the exhaust cam has the variable cam movement to it. Thanks vcso wrench

did the one tooth thing myself on 04 s60, no big deal

Got a sproket locking tool , did my 04 c70 much easier.

FYI did both cars never removed crank pulley, only removed plastic cover, 2 10mm bolts, 1.5 hrs easiest timing belt ever

jenkinskg,
Did you rotate crank to position, past it 1/4 turn CW, then turned it back CCW to alignment with the notches on the belt cover? Just curious if this is necessary to bring VVT in line during the belt change.

Changed a few timings belts so far, no crank pulley remove needed, can do it under 2 hrs
Using cam lock tools makes it twice as easy because nothing can move.

2 10mm bolts under crank get removed, that is all that is needed
