Thanks for not warning me the car i was buying had a dead alternator. Took the car for usual test drive stopped and started it numerous times and no warning lights. Only after a took delivery of the vehicle and tried the 3hour drive back home after 1 hour it started saying "Low battery" NO battery light or muliple lights like my 98 V70. Does Volvo expect us to take a multi meter on the test drive??...nice car to break down in and the rain sounded nice on the sunroof.
THANKS VOLVO thumbs down XC70 2001

Daryl, you should name the dealer. No manufacturer can ensure a car runs 16 years after it leaves the factory.
This was a dealer foul.
Having said that, I'm sorry this happened to you. That's just a bad situation all around. Please let us know how it pans out.

You're blaming a 16 year old, USED car for having an issue?
YES, you should have had the car completely checked out before purchase... plus you bought a 2001, the worst model year Volvo in recent history!

2001s didn't have the worst alternators in history though. A regulator for around 85 bucks should sort it out with any luck.
Dealer lied to you about the engine mount as well. After that I would have lost my faith in the guy. Apart from the few reputable ones on this forum, dealers are slime over here. Most over here have zero true knowledge about anything they sell and they get RWC checks from mates.
Electrics are so important that I've made a point of bringing a voltmeter before I drive any purchase away (dealer or not) as well as checking fluids and tyres. Pretty much it's a pre road-trip vehicle check.
Where in Oz are you from?

Alternator on the '01XC is on LIN data network. It never flagged itself as having a problem. Alternator might be fine.
Isn't this a known symptom of a bad main battery cable or alternator (+) cable: alternator ok but not charging ? It might have been ok during the test drive/starting out for home. Then it got wet.

OK just hooked up a fully charged battery in the back, showed 13v unhooked then hooked up 12.79v after a minute. reading at the engine bay where the altenator should be was 12.85 (i assume the voltage at the battery may have gone up slightly). This is unloaded but i think its a good sign it is the alternator at fault.
*note i took the car to two auto electricians before taking the alternator out, one said everything was fine the other said my alternator was faulty.
