98 V70XC no start P0455

Post by chopsieze »

So, I've been trying to maintain a few vehicles that have all been failing me lately. A couple days ago my Volvo was running rough and just quit on my wife... luckily she was smart enough to pull into a parking lot instead of getting stuck in the middle of traffic. The point it's at now is; no start and it's giving a P0455 EVAP leak detected (large leak) CEL. I did the PVC this winter and it's been running well... except last week it wouldn't start one morning but later that day tried.... ran rough for a minute but smoothed out and was fine the rest of the week. I've had the code for a little while now but since I've been busy all I've done was visually look for vacuum leaks and replace the gas cap.

It's been getting hot so maybe it's the purge valve, which I started reading about today. Can anyone help me with a good link or some advice on an initial/basics way to start troubleshooting? I would really appreciate it. I'm overwhelmed with everything I've got on my plate at the moment and it's tempting (even though I never could) to scrap the car :( someone help me! :D

It is pretty unlikely but not impossible that the evap leak caused the car to stop running.
More likely causes are failures in the fuel delivery system, such as the fuel pump or fuel pump relay, or the ignition system such as the camshaft position sensor.
It sounds like the car is currently not starting. Could you let us know if that means the starter is not turning, or if the starter is turning but the engine doesn't catch and run?

Sorry, it cranks but not starting. Yesterday it cranked and cranked but nothing. The fuel pump seems to be coming on but haven't tested pressure. The other day when I went to pick up my wife and tried to start it, it fired a bit but never fully started. The battery is pretty low now so I grabbed it to charge.

Pull off the blue cap on the end of the fuel fail and press the tip of the schrader valve with a screwdriver to test for fuel. Make sure you cover everything with a rag to avoid a mess.
If you have fuel, then test for spark. Pull one spark plug wire out at a time and hold it over a ground while someone cranks the car and watch to see if a spark jumps. If not, I would make sure the cap/rotor/wires are in good shape and move onto checking sensors. Likely the cam sensor or crank sensor.

I'll check for fuel and fire. Since it's 20 miles away if you have that any tips for testing sensors etc it would be great... that way I just have more things to try while I'm out there. It has pretty new wires, I'll look for cracks on the cap and see what the rotor looks like.

Does it smell on raw fuel when cranking?

I didn't notice it yesterday when I tried to start it but my wife has said she smells fuel sometimes when she gets out of the car.

A can of ether , aka starting fluid , will quickly tell You if you have fuel delivery issues

Your 98 has a vacuum controllled fuel pressure regulator which can blow a diaphragm and flood

So was checking for fuel and fire, seems to have all that. Then started doing a compression test and there is zero pressure in cylinders 3&4 somehow.

Ugh. Head gasket or valve failure.

Pull plugs and evaluate
