Re: lifter noise?

Post by belskee »

Not entirely sure, bolts were so corroded and some of the spring retainers were broken so I couldn't just tighten it up.

I took it off completely and the noise stopped, I put the shield back on when I got some new bolts and springs and the noise didn't come back again.

I went the same way loosenut did, changed cambelt checked the oil pick up o rings, i started thinking it was a bad valve, really sounded engine related but happy to find it to be a much simpler fix

Hello all.
Sorry to keep everyone suspended.
I did the oil pan gaskets about a month ago. That solved the issue that I had on start up and idle when the valves were really noisy.
I took the heat shield off and left it off a little less than a year ago. ( was that a bad idea? )
I really am leaning towards a collapsed lifter. Although. I just don't want it to be....lol.
I'm guessing it is in the exhaust side also since the noise grew louder and sharper after changing from the bbiigg factory cat to a Mangalore cat.
Ill try and get a sound bite and try and upload it in the next few days.

Anyone know anybody selling a good head maybe?

Also yes it gets louder and faster as the load increases.
Guess I'm going to pull it apart the more I read everyone hear the more I'm positive it is a collapsed lifter.
Should I put a heat shield back on....possibly I burned up the valve with the heat from the turbo........
I'm guessing it's exhaust valve in cylinder #4........ugh.

Ok. Figured it out a week ago. This noise I had been chasing sounded ssoooo much like a collapsed lifter. Like one VERY bad lifter....I did the oil pan jazz and nothing.....i did the lifter thing and nothing......injectors still nothing.....only in drive never hear or herd the noise in neutral or park at any rpm.....didn't hear the noise when in drive one at higher rpm either.....drove me crazy for months.....wad about to send my 99 v70 xc 2.4lpt to thr junk yard....even bought another one and was going to swap all my up grades over to the newer volvo......turns out it was the exhaust manifold coming just lose enough to create a very small manifold leak that sounded JUST LIKE a collapsed lifter.....so I hope this helps someone keep their hair because I sure pulled mine out.....

I never would have guessed that. Good find!
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

I never had the sound but when I pulled the head from my wagon I found 2 or 3 manifold bolts missing or very loose.

That's something you never really think to check... the exhaust manifold. My cousin's Durango had an awful knocking sound that was coming from a perforated exhaust manifold. It sounded a lot like lifter tick now that you mention it! Unfortunately it developed an actual rod knock back in January and has been sitting since, awaiting a Hemi swap I hope...
Just another thing to add to the list of parts to never overlook when you're having a mysterious issue.

Yup, mine has the same symptoms and this will be the first area to check. I've been reading the past 4 hours on what it can possibly be and your post may have my solution....here's my clip
