1995 855: Difficult to remove rear rotor

1995 855: Difficult to remove rear rotor

Last time when I changed rear rotor in my 1995 855 NA wagon, I had difficult time to remove driver side rear rotor even with star wheel (inside the hub) undone all the way and loosen parking brake cable under center armrest. Passenger side rear rotor just came right off. Driver side rear rotor was lose but stuck with something inside. I had to pull very hard with screwdriver inserted between the rotor and hub many times to get it out.

What could be the reason for this ? When I installed new rotor, it couldn't go in without touching parking brake pads. Star wheel was screwed in all the way and parking brake pads were adjusted/aligned as circle as possible. This didn't happen to passenger side.

Any help is appreciated.

You probably have rear brake shoes that came undone, there's probably brake dust everywhere, and possibly a broken spring in there. Stuck rotors are more common than not! Might be good for you to replace all the hardware in there.

After I yanked the rotor off, with very hard pull and lot of hammer hit, I saw no broken spring, just dust everywhere. I did replaced all the hardware: spring, clips and e-brake pads; cleaned up with brake cleaner. However, when I installed new rotor, it went in but touching the e-brake pads. I tried to arrange/align 2 e-brake pads as circle as possible to avoid touching the rotor, but it still did. Passenger side did not have this issue. Any suggestion ?

Self adjusting type: look for corrosion or buildup of brake dust or dirt on the moving parts which have developed resistance to movement and not letting the brake release fully when disengaged. I would pay particular attention to the the brake cable.

I had this happen on my S70. Couldn't get driver's side rotor off. Beat it off with a hammer. Was installing new parking brake shoes and hardware. Went to put rotor on and it was to snug with the shoes forced back as far as I could, everything connected properly. Turns out the brake cable had seized, and consequently the shoes weren't releasing. With the rotor off, have someone pull on the hand brake handle (GENTLY) and see if the shoes move at all. If they don't budge at all, then the cable is likely seized. There are plenty of topics covering what to do, but my solution was to just remove all the brake hardware and live with a half functional parking brake.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will definitely check the cable, but before doing that I will have to battle with the rotor again - taking it off :( I replaced brake cable years ago. Back then they were seized. I will do it again. Why don't you replace the brake cable ?
