How to fix / replace key fob?

Post by mdewalle »

I have 2 key fobs with my 2001 V70 and each has come apart. I attached a pic; not sure it's easy to see. But the little screw that keeps it together no longer stays put. It is threaded into plastic and I'm sure the plastic threads are worn out. Both fobs have the same problem.

Can I order replacement fobs? I assume that's pricey. I considered putting it together with super-glue, but then I'll never be able to replace the battery again. For a while I put black electrical tape around it, but that's ugly, sticky and doesn't hold.

I can't be the first one dealing with this. Any suggestions? Thanks!

The reprogramming can be a bit expensive. I "think" you can transplant the inurds from the old case to a new one. It seems I recall seeing new empty cases on ebay in the past.

In the mean time, that silver HVAC tape with the peel-off backing works quite well at holding it together - been doing that the last few years myself. The silver and black color contrast kinda gives it a high tech look ;)

Get a slightly larger self tap screw.
Heat the screw, clamp the 2 halves tight and thread the hot screw into the plastic, unclamp when it cools.

A small drop of epoxy on each side of the remote should do the trick.
LIGHTLY clamp shut (or tape) overnight and you should be good to go!
Install a new battery first, this now should last years!
