TESTING a $500 high milage (300K kms) 2002 XC70, got stuck in the mud the previous day and left it overnight. Night temp dropped to 5celcius and warmed to 15celcius. Awd started working immediately..

If the unit worked silently-GOOD. Now check the fluid level and condition in the bevel gear. If it smells burnt, consider not buying the car.

2002 XC70 has viscous coupler. Those tend to work warm and have less torque transfer cold.

Angle gear to trans final drive spline collar might be more inclined to expand and slip hot and contract and grab cold.

Do you know for sure that rears weren't working the first day? It also crosses my mind that the mud dried a bit and you got more grip for that reason.

yes they worked the previous day, just alot of people on forums/youtube saying they need to be warmed up to work. as for torque i dont know but there is no way in hell my FWD V70 would get out of that.

My 740 got stuck like that, on my sloping soggy lawn, it was sliding sideways into a boat I was working on, left it overnite and it pulled out the next day. Ground drains faster than it dries from evaporation. Did you buy the car ?
