re- inserting halfshaft

Post by azureblue »

Help needed quick... I was replacing the A arm on the passenger side and somehow the hub / rotor assembly got partially pulled out of the transmission during the work. The splines from the half shaft are still engaged in the transmission - I can turn the rotor and hear the transmission make noises. How do I push the half shaft back into the transmission?

I hate to use the word urgent, but the wagon carries my wife's wheel chair, and I need to get the v70 today..

The circlip needs to compress a little before it will slide in and lock to place. Wiggle it around in a circular motion while tapping it modestly with a rubber mallet and see if you can get it to work in. If no luck with that approach give it a good hard whack, but be mindful to use something between your mallet and the inner joint to distribute the force across several inches so as not to damage the boot. You can easily punch a hole in the boot if you're not careful at which point it all has to be pulled off the car again.

The circlip is under the inner boot? Do I need to separate the half shaft from the hub/ rotor assembly?

Thanks. Job done - the bearing came out of the inner hub, so it was just a matter of rotating the half shaft and pushing it back in...

That I had no problem with. Another question, though, how much grease should be in there? Everything was well coated with grease, and the grease looked clean. I suspect the PO replaced the inner and outer boots, too they were in near new shape.
I'm not confident with that jubilee clamp. I got it back on and clamped it back down with dykes and it looked secure enough... I would have replaced it with a zip tie if I had one long enough, so I'm thinking about getting some long zip ties and replacing the clamp.

When replacing mine, I used a socket over the end of the outer spline... held shaft so it was straight-on... gave it a whack-a-doo with a 6# dead blow. POP! in it went.
