How do I remove my front cigarette lighter/auxillary socket?

Post by jh221 »

re: 2005 S60

My front cigarette lighter/auxillary socket is no longer working. At first, neither the front nor rear socket worked. I found the fuse under the steering wheel, and it was blown. I replaced it, and now the rear socket works, but the front still does not work. I believe whatever short-circuited the front socket also blew the fuse, but that is somewhat beyond my expertise.

My next effort is to replace the front socket (unless there is actually ANOTHER fuse for the front socket, but per the Volvo manual, the front and back should be the same fuse). I successfully removed the front trim on that bottom portion of the console that holds the cigarette lighter. This really did not gain much, other than now I can get a hold of a small lip on the front socket with a wrench to either twist it or pull it out--but that leads to my question...

Does anyone know how it is attached or how it is properly removed? Can it actually be removed this way, or do I need to find a way around to access the rear of the console? Any tips for a novice to reach the back of that socket, to check wiring or replace the socket? Seems like this should be a $10-$20 repair, and I really don't want to pay hundreds for the dealer to fix it.

I appreciate any tips.

Those instructions worked perfectly for my 2005 S60. Very easy to follow. Popped the console out, and sure enough, the plug had come off the cigarette lighter. Popped the wire/plug back on, closed it up, and now it works.

Wonder how much the dealer would have charged for that 3 minutes worth of work.

Do you have the same instructions for a 2007 S80 with the cigarette lighter in the center console?
Thank you

Hi mate,

I have been tinkering with this for quite some time. With that step by step pdf it was fixed in a few minutes! Thanks for taking the effort!
