xc90 P2188 code
Re: xc90 P2188 code
Any luck on resolving the problem? I have decided it may be my MAF and am in the process of ordering one. I want the Bosch one that is in the car. I ordered it online and got cheap aftermarket so am in the process of getting the Bosch one still. My car has all the same symptoms and as long as I disconnect the battery every 20 miles or so, I need to put an effing switch in there I do it so much LOL, it runs great. If I don't drive it to long after the CEL comes on the only code that is thrown is the P0101, the P2188 comes on if I continue driving to long after the CEL comes on. Not sure if you've seen my other post but I watched a video on MAF diagnosis on you tube and one of the things was that if you unplug the MAF while the car is running and the symptoms clear up than there is a good chance it's the MAF. The first time I replaced mine was about 50k and now it has 120k so that's 70k on this one. I also watched a video that and the guy thought that the MAF cleaner might ruin them too, not sure on that but either way I'm not to thrilled with my Volvo these days if you know what I mean.
Hello, I have this same problem. It happened right after I had recall service for a new fuel pump put in three weeks ago. After the service I had slow acceleration and a somewhat loud noise coming from the area near the vacuum hoses. I had codes scanned and got a P0101. I was about to test the MAF and upon looking down I realized that my brake booster vacuum switch was broken in half and the spring was laying on top of the fuse box. I am not sure what would have caused this to come apart. After speaking to the dealer I was convinced that this was my problem and ordered and installed a new one from Volvo. When I start the car it certainly idles better but I still have a loud noise coming from this area of my car. I am wondering if I have more than one problem going on now and also wondering if this broken vacuum switch could have created a domino into a bad vacuum pump or would a bad vacuum pump blow the switch? I also have the engine system service required and check engine light on. I just turned 100K and other than fuel pump recall work my Volvo has been free of problems. I am still perplexed how the top of the switch was totally blown off. Too much pressure? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Well, I recently took Volvo up on there new "up to 1 hour of free diagnostics". I had decided not to start replacing parts randomly in hopes of figuring this problem out. I had diagnosed the MAF sensor as probably being the problem and had ordered two online and got aftermarket ones which I have read don't work so I wanted the Bosch one. The dealer confirmed that it was the MAF and only wanted $571 to replace it. I ran home and ordered one from Amazon for $102 with tax and free shipping included and took the ten minutes to install it myself. The dealer said the 2188 was thrown because of the P0101/MAF failure. I put 500 miles on the car yesterday and no CEL.

PEOPLE LISTEN UP..... P2188 CAUSED BY HOLE IN TURBO OUTLET HOSE ON TURBO...OR DOWNSTREAM OF TURBO AT INTERCOOLER HOSE
OR HOSE DOWNSTREAM OF INTERCOOLER BEFORE ENTERING THROTTLE OPENING...BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE....WHEN THE TURBO SPOOLS UP
CREATING PRESSURE IN TURBO OUTLET HOSE , AIR RUSHES OUT THAT HOLE INSTEAD OF GOING INTO THE ENGINE , AT THE SAME TIME THE MAF IS SENSING MASSIVE AIRFLOW ==SO THE ECU WIDENS THE PULSEWIDTH TO THE INJECTORS = SO YOU HAVE MASSIVE RICH = BUT THE ENGINE DEVELOPS
LOW POWER DUE TO RICH CONDITION = TRUST ME.

UPDATE ! code P2188 long term fuel trim at lower limit.
caused by hole in turbo outlet hose , or intercooler hose- inlet or outlet , or loose clamp on hose.
when turbo spools up air under pressure rushes out hole in hose , instead of going into engine,
pressurized air escapes to atmosphere.
when turbo is spooled up , MAF sends high airflow signal to ECU , this drives injector dwell RICH
the result is low power going up hills + carbon fouled spark plugs.
oil going past turbo deteriorates rubber intercooler hoses.

A big fat THANK YOU TO TURBOTROUBLE and his sage advise
Have a 05 XC90 2.5T ...had history of p0101 and p2188, which were solved with new MAF
Fast forward year later, P2188 coming back.
Doubting another MAF, did some checking and couldn't locate the problem. Stumbled on this thread and took his advise and thoroughly inspected all the piping.
Found the charge air pipe from the intercooler to the Throttle body was split in the flexible part at the bottom where it couldn't be seen unless it was removed. I had checked this before but just a quick visual but after reading what he stated, i removed it all to inspect and boom, there it was. To confirm before buying a new part, i took some 1 inch wide friction tape and taped the heck out of it to seal it and reinstalled it, cleared code and problem solved. No more CEL, stumble, stall , it's fixed.
And so far, its holding, haven't had to spend the $80. for a new one, but found some used on ebay for $25.00
Also found my front engine mount is broken, allowing the engine to torque too much which I believe may have caused the pipe to crack.
Anyway people, listen and heed his advise. It's correct.
I owe you a few beers Turbotrouble
Thanks Joe
