2002 V70 xc turbo, no codes but running poorly, clean ETB?

Post by aaron1611 »

So, I'm not new to Volvo's, we've owned about a dozen of them and have had to replace a few ETM's but luckily this one should not have this issue. I just picked it up and It's got about 115K with service records and I will be doing the pcv service kit that I ordered from FCP and it's not throwing any codes but it is showing "reduced engine performance". I figure while I'm in there that I should clean the ETB but should I think about replacing the "harness" that you can get from xemodex or even the ETB? I'm fairly optimistic that this will be a good ride for the wife and kids but trying to stay away from spending more money than I need to at this stage. Thank you.

I think you dodge the bad ETB in a 2002 turbo, and get the reliable Bosch unit. Double check that in the sticky in The ETM Forum

Still clean it.
All get dirty by 100K miles and the difference doing a breather, new spark plugs and cleaning the TB is amazing (unless you have another issue).
It's right there when you remove the manifold to do the breather so why wouldn't you clean it??!!

yep, sorry if I wasn't clear. I will for sure clean the ETB when I'm in there but should I buy the new harness? Or am I good to go as long as I do a thorough clean?

so, I tore it all apart today and with the help of my son we got it all put back together again just as night fell and the thunder was rolling in. My next question is should I drain the oil first or add some seafoam or other product and run it for a bit then do an oil and filter change? My PCV hose's and inlets were 75% blocked but the ETM was not too bad but I did a thorough clean of it and barring any mistakes I expect it to run much better tomorrow. Thanks for your input.

so, I went to start up the volvo today and it will not start. sounds like it's not getting fuel as the engine keeps turning like its about to start or wants to start.... :o the fuel rail is full of pressure. all vacuum lines are connected as is everything else. I'm not sure why it's not. Is there something that I'm missing??

just an update. Everything was as it should be all I needed to do was spray a little bit of carb starter and it started right up!!! Perfect idle runs well. I was still getting the reduced engine performance but it went away after about 10 mins of driving. Same again this morning but it went away again after about 10mins. IT was a royal PITA to do this job due to limited access but for a weekend mechanic I didn't find it all that challenging. Go for it!! Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions.

So, latest update, problem not solved. Car has continued to get the "reduced engine performance" error continually with no limp home mode or any CEL's. I did get the flashing "check engine light" yesterday that turned into a solid CEL after about 15 seconds. Pulled codes from OBD11 and I have these in this order,
P0304 cylinder 4 misfire-pending
P0337 crank position sensor A circuit low input-pending
P0234 Turbo over boost-pending

I got under the hood and found two small leaks in vacuum lines by spraying starting fluid and replaced those lines, one of them was almost flat as if there was too much suction. With the car running I unplugged the MAF and there was an immediate change in idle that last 1 second and then returned to normal. I even took it for a test drive with it unplugged and it drove the same, perhaps a little better. I cleaned out the MAF and it made no difference. Normally I would replace MAF at this point but....

I also experienced the feeling like my transmission is downshifting too late when I come to a stop and at times when I go to accelerate the transmission upshifts too late. However, at idle the tach does not surge or bounce around but it does feel likes it hunting at idle.

So, before I start throwing parts at it like the Boost control solenoid, MAF & ETM I'd like a little bit of guidance.Thanks.
