Hey,

I was wondering if any of you had similar problem. My engine head gasket was blown so I decided to have full engine head repair which ended up getting strange noise from 2nd or 3rd piston area. All hydraulic lifters were changed to new - problem still occures. Any suggestions? btw. Its petrol (pb95) engine, 2.4 liter with additional LPG fuel (noises are present on both type of fuel so its probably not fuel dependent).

Some of Polish Volvo owners told me thats probably pistons hiting head or head gasket - any way to examine that without taking it apart?

Here is a video showing a problem:

Thanks in advance,
Greg

It isn't Pistons hitting the heads or valves

I think it might just be an exhaust leak on one of the middle cylinders

 Have you driven it for a while? One of my turbo wagons had that problem after sitting forna while, but hitting the rev limiter in gear once or twice calmed everything down. Except for my excitement...

Its been 2 weeks since head rebuild. Guys from the shop says its hydraulic lifters doesn't filled up with oil - I won't buy it. If it's realy hitting valves of head (head gasket) I don't think hitting rev limiter is a great idea. I concluded they took too much material from engine head while surface preparation on cnc, and then they used wrong - too thin - gasket.

If a valve hit the piston, it woild be way louder. I think the lifters don't fill properly.

Not sure the source of the noise, but I would love to know your fuel rail set up and why you changed out the OE system.

 It sounds just like lifters and they will fill with oil if you give them a chance to. Some people leave them in oil before placing them back in.

After 200-500 miles you won't hear a thing.
If this doesn't work I would be replacing O rings on the sump to help improve oil flow as when these O rings crack younger reduced oil flow to the head.
Let us know how it pans out.

If valves hit piston you would immediately get zero compression on that cylinder, a CEL on dash and a throbbiing, unbalanced engine.

I'll guess that's part of an LPG System , popular in EU

I hope your Volvo friends aren't car enthusiasts.

Your pistons are definitely not hitting the valves or head, that would be catastrophic failure of the engine and after one hit, the car would barely run.

I agree, lifters are a bit noisy, don't worry about it. Take it for a highway run and make sure your engine is full with good quality oil.

You guys are awesome!

@shaker_chi Fuel rail is not modified. There are custom LPG injectiors mounted under fuel rail into air intake.

@precopster all of them were treated with oil before montage. I was wondering if they cleaned up oil lines (tubes) inside head after cnc surface planing. btw. those oring were replaced, and oil pressure is great (thats what he said).

@mecheng yeah, I agree. (those guys are volvo owners I guess) But should I consider that head gasket colides with piston? Could it be that tight around it?

So is it possible that lifters needs 5days to fill up? Could it be camshaft?
I also forgot to say that rod bearings were changed as well - all of them. Maybe sound comes from here?
