2000 V70 turn signal issue

Post by scot850 »

When test driving the 'project' I noticed the turn signals do not switch off after turning left. I thought initially maybe the steering had not been centered correctly when the PO had the tie-rods replaced. But, even 'over correcting' does not work, but once or twice it did switch off.

Is there any 'known issues' with the lever, or is it a case of when the crap out they are done. Is there any part other than the turn signal lever assembly that can break in the column itself?

I plan to pull it apart tomorrow if time allows, but prefer to go into the job knowing if there are any obvious fault areas to check.

Thanks,

Neil.

there is a cam on the column, unlikely to fail, signal switch is the wear item. Also the electronic item. I recently replaced the switch on POS70-250k-ish, with a JY part, now mine cancel. (part of 5 year stage 0 project)

Cheers

Hi guys. Thanks for your inputs. This is the sort of info I was looking for as I was not convinced that the turn signal lever is necessarily the is necessarily the issue, but did not know what else it could be. Robert, the video is awesome as usual and thanks for linking it in!

This car is turning into the same PITA as the 'R'. Jacked the car up and put on axle stands, removed the steering column cowling, turn the ignition to II. Switch the turn signal to LEFT, turn wheel CCW and click. Turn back and it switched off as it should. Try the same on the RIGHT and turn the wheel CW and the same, worked as it should. Only thing I will now watch for is if you have to over correct to get the signal to switch off when driving. Problem was when driving short distance home, all turns where to the left bar one.

I tried the test multiple times including at each stage of re-assembly and worked as it should.

AARGHHHH! Stupid car!!!!! So after checking the turn signals as per Robert's video, naturally it all ran just fine. Clicked on turning and switched off as it should. Today, took the car for another test run on a couple of errands, and all good going there. Maybe 3-4 miles. No warning lights, signals all worked as they should. Click on first turning and switch off when straightening up. Go into Costco for maybe 30 minutes or so, and come back out and load the car up. Get in and switch on and the temp gauge is reading 31C (about 88F), and start driving home. After a few turns notice turn signals not cancelling again. Bugger!! Notice no click when turning the wheel either way and had to manually switch off. What the hell is going on???

I will have to jack the car back up and have yet another look, but I guarantee it will work fine when colder again. I hate this car!! I'm going to assume the higher internal temp in the cabin is maybe causing the issue that Robert mentions of the raised lever on the steering column is marginal for contact and the gap is opening up when the cabin gets really warm.

Any further insight much appreciated!!

Well, took the housing off around the steering column. Removed the turn signal assembly and looked at the plastic part Robert talks about on his video that is part of the clock spring assembly. I can see a rub mark on the black portion of the plastic lip that Robert shows and it has a rub depression, but it looks like the white plunger from the lever has plenty of 'overlap'. I could see that if the black plastic bent away it may cause an issue.

So if the plastic lip bends inward toward the column, the white plunger will not 'trip' on the return. I think the more likely culprit is the white plunger spring becomes weak and not pushing the lever out sufficiently and therefore I was not getting the 'click' as the plunger was not extending. Have to believe the plunger is either sticky or the spring is getting weak and the plunger is not working correctly.

I have cleaned and used a little silicon oil on the plastic plunger and it is clicking and working again, but I have left the lower cover off until I am sure all is well. I will keep an eye out for another working lever at PnP in case the issue keeps re-occuring.

I do have an additional thing to ask. Is it normal for the aluminum casting that the turn signal and wind-shield washer levers mount supposed to be able to rotate slightly? I would have expected it to be a slid mount but maybe there is meant to be a slight looseness to it. Not sure if you can tighten it as it is held in place by the shear screws.

I swapped the turn signal lever unit for a PnP sourced one and now it all is working again as it should.

Thanks for the help guys!

I think the list of what you have touched on that

It will be close! If only the body (of the car LoL!!) was as good as the mechanicals will end up!

Did you get around to the AWD on the 'R' yet?
