Clanking noise when turning a corner

Post by dirkavanulden »

On my 2000 XC70 clanking noises started appearing when turning a corner. Went to the dealer where the noise was diagnosed as control arm, possible strut and cv shaft failure. I replaced all of those but to my chagrin, the noise is still there. It appears to be originating from a spot close to the shifter, in the center of the car under the console.
I crawled under the car this morning but I can't see anything that might cause this distinct loud noise as if the tranny is coming apart. Again, it only makes noise when I turn either left or right.
My wife is making fun of me and is asking if I can find more parts to replace. Help please! Thanks in advance!

Check the front CV of the drive shaft.
The boot has most likely been cooked
by the cat and your CV joint has failed.

And find another mechanic...
Sounds like they saw you coming!
This should have been a simple diagnosis.

Check the cross member that supports the drive shaft carrier bearing. Is it loose or rusted causing the drive shaft to come in contact with a body part. There is also a heat shield that can come into contact with the drive shaft when the AC condensation drip corrodes away the fittings causing the shield to droop.

Thanks kahl - I looked up previous posts on this subject and found that the prop shaft bearing may be the culprit. Indeed, upon examination the one in my car is shredded so that may be the problem. I will remove the shaft and see if that solves the noise. If so, I understand that there is a company in Colorado that can rebuild it. The local Volvo dealer told me that this shaft is no longer in production or available as OEM. Hard to believe that Volvo would drop the ball on this seemingly common problem with AWDs.

Be sure to have a look at the front CV, as well.
I'll betcha a donut that it's got no boot left.

They do a good job at Colorado Drive shafts, so have them re-build it for you. Not cheap but should be good for another 17 years!

Well - I removed the prop shaft and as kahl predicted, it is the retainer bearing midway between the transmission and the rear differential. The clanking has disappeared. If I had only known this before, it would have saved me a lot of time and money. I will have the shaft rebuilt by the Colorado outfit.
Strangely, but perhaps not, the Volvo dealer never diagnosed this as the problem. Do they even hire real mechanics anymore? (I forgot, they are now called service technicians so they can charge more for less knowledge)
Thanks to everyone for your invaluable advice. I will follow up once the rebuilt shaft is reinstalled.

Glad you found the root cause. If it ain't the front joint it is the carrier bearing that goes, but makes sense to have it overhauled to save a do-over. While you are in there, check the front mounting bush on the viscous coupling casing for splits/perishing.

Took my 2000 V70R to my independent mechanic for the same symptoms. They replaced the entire rear drive shaft with a new one last year so I'm disappointed and wondering why I'm having this problem.

Was the new one an OE part, or a reconditioned/used part? Is should not have failed unless they did not re-fit it correctly or is is a substandard part. Are you sure it is that and not the bush on the front of the viscous coupling unit failing?

Either way take it back and ask them to re-look at it.
