Well after calming down and looking again it was the correct PNP switch was just a pain separating the plug from the plugin block and installing the new one but I got it done and the flashing arrow is gone and the w button works as it should. The brake switch plug, however, is full of brake fluid from the leaking switch which I assume is causing the brake switch and check engine light to stay on even though when I scanned it should no engine faults.

Probably the ABS module failing. It throws all sorts of weird and random dash warning lights. Mine through issues with Brake/ABS/STC and on one occasion the upward flashing trans arrow.

Check with Matty at Mid-West ABS. I just fitted one of his re-built units and so far so good.

I have heard of him definitely a less expensive option I sent off the ABS for my 2001 Passat and had it rebuilt for 100 and warrantied for life.

Matty has been a god-send to us on this website and probably others too. There are other places too, but the advantage he has that for a small additional charge he will ship you a unit and trust you will return yours once it has been replaced. That way you have limited downtime. He also has a how-to video on his web-site for swapping it out. He also kindly includes the E5 Torx socket on a return basis to remove the 4 screws that hold in in place on the AB pump.
