Fuel Filter Quick Disconnects

Post by Motrellim » Sat Aug 12, 2017 8:44 pm

Help! Fuel filter very rotted. Unable to push in clips to remove disconnects. What is the secret? 2002 V70XC. 241K miles. Don't want to break anything. Thanks!!!

In theory, you only need to push in the clips and the fuel line is released. However, they're probably dirty and stuck, so be patient and maybe try to soak them with WD40 or similar. In any case, it's a good idea to relieve fuel pressure on the fuel rail to avoid splashing fuel. This might also facilitate releasing the fuel line. I would also recommend to wear gloves and have a pan ready to collect the fuel (based on my observations watching my mechanic change the fuel filter on my 2002 V70, he did differently and spilled fuel on his skin and on the ground).

As above: spray and soak.
Have you removed the metal holding strap? The little play you'll create can help.

If things go really awry do not freak. NAPA (and others) sell a repair kit which features a clip on 18" of replacement fuel line for each end (meaning there are two in the package) for very reasonable money. The kit includes couplings.

On these cars I have changed a fuel filter by feel, kneeling beside the car, because the hardware worked so well.
Other times it's been like you're experiencing.

The quick connects get dirt caked in them which interferes with pressing the tabs in to release them. As Motrellim said. Higher pressure spray works faster if you have something to attach to your hose that can direct the spray into the backside of the connect.

IIRC the push button disconnects are 2 buttons you push simultaneously-thumb and forefinger TOWARD each other.

Also, I recall square buttons which were square. Get your hands all around the filter (as in: remove the securing strap) if you haven't already.
