Gas tank problems
Gas tank problems
Ok so my name is Steve and I'm a proud owner of a 1995 Volvo 850. Great car. Have done many repairs myself. My issue is there is a skid plate holding my gas tank up and it's just about corroded away. Cannot find part numbers for the life of me. Even Volvo techs cannot find any info. Says everyone he's seen has straps. There are no straps. Hoping someone can give me an explanation on this. Is the straps a revised solution? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve!
Out of my head (it´s pouring, I´m not going outside right now):
Every car has that shield plate. And straps.
You had them too, a long long time, many salty winters ago. The bolts on the right side of the picture are the last reminders of them. Btw, I think right now nothing but age and dirt holds your gastank up there. And maybe the fuel filler neck.
Fix that soon!

Hey Clemens! I just checked again and can't see any evidence of any straps that could have been there. The bolts in the picture are securing a small strap piece from the underbody to the skid plate. Yes it is terrible. It looks like it is going to be very fun to get the bolts on the underbody off.

I'm pretty sure you are referring to this assembly which does show a guard with straps. My configuration is not like this. This has been very hard to find information on. I'm very experienced with lots of configurations so i would know if there was some straps on there and I can assure you that there was no such thing. I was very much hoping someone on this site would have the knowledge to identify and explain the current assembly I have.

Is that not a strap passing behind the tank guard on the right hand side of the picture? I the tank on the 850 not similar to the FWD V/S 70 NA cars? In fairness it is hard to see, but it does look like it stops at that mounting nut on the RHS of the picture.
I had to replace the guard plate behind the tank on my 2000 V70 base NA as the PO had managed to destroy it totally. If you look at my thread on the resurrection on the project there is a section on it in there with pictures:

Here's a better look at what is holding this gas tank up. As you can see, the "skid plate" is directly bolted in 2 areas to the underbody. There is one strap that bolts to the skid plate and underbody. That is it. I'm going to provide the serial tag under the hood to. Yeah I know there's not much holding it, that's why I'm trying g to figure out what the part number is. I know you guys may get a bunch of obvious questions but don't be mistaken, as I've said, I'm very experienced with parts and locating part numbers so for me to ask for assistance, I think it's going to be a little more in depth then 9186293.

Every 850 I have owned has had straps holding up the fuel tank. Maybe just get straps since that would be so easy.

Just get straps. You sound like the Volvo tech now. Can't return them, yet it's obvious they won't fit, there's no bolt holes in the corresponding locations. No, I'm good ive been doing this long enough to know that would be a foolish move as there is no place to physically put the bolts. However here is that serial tag. And a picture of my copper brake lines. I just like to show these off lol.

I've used some heavy duty all strap and sheet metal screwed and secured them to my underbody until I can find a proper solution. I'm thinking this car will be part of a series that had an uncommon or unrevised configuration. Thanks for all the help everyone.
