Re: Gas tank problems

Post by scot850 »

There was a problem with fuel tank mounts on some cars. Can't recall if it was 850 or later. However, when I put your Vin# into Vida it comes up with the layout of the standard cars with both emissions code options/layouts and they have the same tank supports.

If the dealer supplied the parts wrongly then they need to take them back if the used the Vin to order them.

My recommendation as a 40+ year owner of Volvos is to take the car to them and ask them to take a look under the car and find out what is going on. It could be someone has made something up or there is some weird stuff going on. Maybe you are not seeing the correct mount points as they can be hidden or attached to other things which make things less obvious. I would be seriously concerned that the fuel tank mounts are not sufficient to support a full tank, especially in the case of an accident.

The service department has access to Volvo technical so should be able to get an answer for you.

Thank you so much for your advice Neil. Many times I have looked under and I am still coming to the same conclusion. The nearest Volvo dealership around is about 100 miles away. I have brought it to a euro car repair shop and they told me they arent touching it because it is a can of worms, tried to sell me a different Volvo, then charged me for an hour an a half at 90+ dollars an hour. Also with it being obvious that the parts/straps listed WILL NOT work, all good and dandy sending them back, then my fuel tank is sitting on the ground until I do find a solution. I did find one part of this assembl,y being the strap on the driver side that goes from the skid plate to the body on fcp euro a little over a year ago when I first noticed how bad it was getting. But I could not find the rest of the assembly. That's when I brought it in. When I just checked again to post the part, it is no longer even listed on the site. I was able to get the filler neck collar pieces which was also corroded and was able to install that. So that was great. I did not like how I had to buy both halves...that was kinda cheesy. But I needed it. Yes there are only 3 mount locations on this. In fact with the spare tire molding of the underbody underneath, it also would not allow for those part numbers 9454593,9463196 to be installed. I was thinking someone may have modified the assembly as well, but further inspection verified this is all original. I'm glad I can rattle your brains as this has been driving me crazy for the past year. Cars in great shape. Am not giving up. But I don't know if I can take more person telling me there's straps and I just don't see them lol.

Appreciate the dealer is so far away, mine is fortunately only about 15 miles away, but they are the best placed to figure this out for you. It may well be correct, or could have been an personal import from another country which may have different options. I will try to check for a 93-4 model as there were some variations form the early years and Volvo are famous for cross over years having left-over parts used on them.

I'll get back to you if I find anything.

Now that would make sense. I could imagine from the way this is going, is it will either be no longer available, or this assembly is sitting in a warehouse in Sweden, all the way in the back, lots of dust and will probably have some crazy hefty price tag on it. But it sure would be nice to know.Appreciate the help, thanks.

I have had a look back to 93 on 850's including European versions, but they all show the same double strap mounting system.

It may be worth phoning the nearest dealer as I recall there was a P80 replacement fuel tank process, but can't recall what it was for (it may have been plastic mounts on the tank breaking off). I am sure someone wrote about that recently and had the tank replaced under warranty. Still think it may be worth investing the time and money (gas and maybe 0.5 hour labour) to go get the dealer put the car up on a hoist and take the parts with you and let them figure it out. It could be there was a re-design done your car never got?

As to old parts, Ford sold off all the old Volvo parts to a company in Sweden and they now draw the parts from them as needed if they are available. Their website is here, but you will need part numbers:

http://www.gcp.se/en/

You can order direct, but strangely the dealer prices are often less! PArts can take a while and I think they sometimes get batches of parts made when there is enough interest. I had to wait for 5 months for some parts when re-building the rear suspension and AWD on my 2000 V70R.

Let us know how you get on!

Actually, the spare tire molding does not interfere at all with the gas tank straps. Every 850 has that spare tire well.

Did you ever figure this out? I am in the EXACT same boat. Gas tank plate is all corroded away and looks the same but there is NO place for straps. I've been searching for part numbers for the gas tank and am having difficulty finding anything. Did find one strap but there is no location to put them. Would love to see a picture of someone's gas tank with the corresponding straps if possible.

I’ve got the gas tank out of my parts 1998, so I can send pictures, might have parts you need , too.

Just drove out and back to near you, but Cambridge, not Boston

🤪

Here are some pictures of that system from the Volvo web store. Both the “gas tank straps” , which translate to “tensioning band” in Swedish , are available new for not too many kroner.
