Naming things

I need help naming these things around my car because I would like to replace them, but as you can imagine it is rather hard to order a part that you do not know the name of. Any help would be appreciated. If you can provide a link to a store where I can purchase the part, that would be most helpful. 95' 850 base model

Lets get started.

What are the little clips that hold the trim on called? Just along the outside, and I just need the clips. I have the actual trim.

What are these little knobby things called? They indicate whether the car is locked or unlocked.
They are supposed to look like this

This is more of a suggestion than a part name. The rubber seal around the door frame is coming off, what would you guys do to fix it if this was happening in your car?

The seal at the top of the windshield is kinda just gone. What should I do?

The casing(?) under the steering wheel is falling off. How would I fix it/what parts do I need to order to fix it?

There is kinda just a hole behind the gas and brake pedals, which I don't believe is impacting performance at
all but is looking kinda ratty.

That is a long list of stuff to sort out for you. I will try to find time to list some of then for you. Many are still available, but as they will mount up to a lot of money, you may want to consider a junkyard visit. Check if there are any 850's in your area that you can pull stuff from. Realistically the plastic parts and trim all go brittle and finding good used ones may be a challenge. The buckets around the inner door handles always split, and you have to be very careful when re-fitting the door panels as it can be easy to break even a new one (ask how I know..). I bought a couple in that color last year from Volvo as I couldn't find any good ones and I was on a time line (car went to brother in California).

The door rubber sealing trims tend to sag with age around the door openings. I recall they may have a metal core in them. Sometimes you can gently squeeze them either side on crimp them tighter. If that does not work, then some rubber contact cement will work. Don't need to go crazy with it just put it in some spots in case you have to remove it again for any reason.

Seatbelt catches: the easiest way to fix is to replace and that goes for both the glove box cover and the and the seat-belt catches.

Those door lock lever buttons can also be bought, but gain a junkyard is a good source. To break one like that takes a lot of stupidity.

Airbag surround is not an easy fix other than to swap for a better top dash section. You could try some upholstery glue and see if you can tuck it back in place in the short term.

The upper seal on the front windshield is a beauty strip and not the actual seal. It does keep water out but the windshield is bonded in place which makes the seal. The problem is there is a second strip under that rubber one which has clips that the outer one snaps into. It becomes brittle and the clips break. The only way to replace that is to remove the windshield and fit both new parts. If you are lucky the inner part may be k and just need an outer seal.

The lower dash pads have a problem of the captured nut breaking or the plastic around it. In the case of the one in the picture, you could find a nut and glue it behind the hole and then fit the new bolt to hold it in place.

Not sure what hole you are talking about around the pedals. What you are seeing there is the bottom of the steering column and there is a bearing in the domed portion. Otherwise I don't see anything obviously missing there.

The two cars listed above are recent arrivals at the Portland South U-pull. I only searched sedans, they may have some wagons also.

Luckily, Volvo has a huge market in the Rose city. Sounds like time for you to roll up your sleeves and start playing.

Also, find a Volvo official parts webpage, they have exploded diagrams of subassemblies, so you can easily locate parts and terminology.

I'll make a start. This is only a guide, and suggest confirming parts with the dealer as they may have a part # change:

Door trim mouldings (what Volvo call them, some people call them rubbing strips). The front moulding in the front fender uses 2 X Part # 6806505 per side (clip)

Front door trim moulding uses 5 x Part # 9133386 (clip). I am also guessing there may be a small screw at the rear of the front door holding the trim in place based on the small round hole. This is not listed that I can see.

Now the strange one. Rear door moulding shows a different part # 6806502 but for only 1 clip. This is not clear so a trip to a [arts yard like FLX90 suggests may be a good move so you can remove a strip from a parts car to confirm.

I think Vida is not so much wrong but not accurate. It could be the front door uses 5 of the 2nd clip and 1 of the third on the front door, and a similar method for the rear door. Can't see the rear door in your picture but it would be similar to the front door.


Window top strip on front windshield: inner part that the rubber strip clips into is called Retainer upper - Part # 9178160 and the outer rubber strip is called - Trim moulding upper - Part # 9190113

Still recommend a junkyard for the glove box door. Even if you buy the wrong colour you can move the lock parts over. Just make sure to transfer your lock tumbler or your key won't work.

For the front seat belt latch also suggest a used one. There are 2 part #'s listed based on chassis number range:

Front left: #9136184 up the chassis upto # 314238, and # 9167651 for chassis # 314239 on.

Front right: #9136185 up the chassis upto # 314238, and # 9167652 for chassis # 314239 on.

For the inner door handle 'buckets' I would need to know your interior colour trim code. It is on the Vin# plate on the inner fender by the battery. It is a 4 digit # on the RHS of the plate with a number like 3471 or 3571 in that style.

Chassis number (last 6 numbers of the Vin#) would help as there is a chassis # split on that too.

Thanks Neil, this is quite a help. All these little things I am finding that need to be fixed, its ridiculous! This will let me fix many of those problems, I didn't expect to get quite this amount of knowledge! Ill provide a colour trim code and chassis number asap!

Yeah, the pick-n-pull next to me has 4 volvo's within '94-'97, all 850 models. Some are relatively new, I should go soon to make sure I can get those parts!

It will do as these old cars can suck your wallet dry quickly. If you look for my recent thread on my new Project a 2000 model V70 NA (base model no-turbo) it has amazed me how quickly this can happen. A car that ran and was being used (we have no inspection rules here or emission rules), that turned out be be down-right dangerous with many bodges by previous owner and 'repair' shops who clearly can not be licensed, has got me a car with many, many issues that took me mostly 8 months on a 2 month project line I had hoped for. PnP has saved me many times, particularly on things like broken trim, lights, seats and many other items.

So be ready, as PnP will become your friend very quickly!

It is also a great place to go to figure out how things work and fit together without breaking your own first. Not that I recommend anyone go out and intentionally wreck these valuable resources, but it does help.

Once you get the chassis # and colour code I will be checking back to see what you find and will then try to get you the correct part numbers where that info is required.
