Random Stalling need advice please :)

Post by get_rocd »

I'm having problems figuring out why my 2000 v70 is stalling at random.
Any info you guys can share will be greatly appreciated.
The car is a super clean 140,000 2000 v-70 I bought about 2 yrs ago.
It's FWD, non turbo base model.
Nothing too special but I've got some wheels on it etc.
My stalling issue started over a month ago.
Once it started I placed a fuel pressure gauge on it near the windshield so I could determine if it was fuel or spark.
The fuel pressure read at the rail never waivered
during a stall condition. Then I went into my house the one day to grab something, left the car run for a minute in the driveway. I came back out to it stalled just sitting there. I knew this would be a great time to check a couple more things.
I proceeded to check spark at this point, and sure enough
It gave me 1 spark per crank then zero spark.
Ive seen this exact condition when I tried using a non volvo chip key I had made for my doors in case of a lockout.
So I began to suspect the chip in the key going bad.
$150 for key + $100 to program didn't solve problem.
Then tried a used antenna ring $20 off eBay.
Still stalls randomly especially over bumps in the road. But it will also stall just sitting.
I'm sure this is a spark issue and not fuel.
Any clues on what could be killing my spark?
Also, I'm not getting any codes at all which is almost frustrating cause I have no clue where to check next.
Thank you for your time in reading and helping.
I love this car, it's beautiful, but it's killing me.

Could be a failing crank sensor or a failing cam sensor. Either can kill spark and usually does it without a code. But I'd expect one to pop up eventually give your description.

What was your fuel pressure at the rail? It needs to be 52 psi for ME7 cars like yours and mine.

If you are on your original ignition switch, that is a known wear item. The electrical part is easily replaced.

The. Chip and antenna on the 99-rarely gives problems. When it does its start , run one second, stall.

Try looking at terminal 4 on any coil pack fir battery voltage and see if you are getting good supply to coils

Im curious to see what your resolution is on this. I am dealing with a very similar issue with my 1999 C70. Started while coming to a stop two weeks ago and stalled. Since then it has gotten to the point where I can only run the car for 10 minutes at a time. My seems to act up once the car warms up, but like you, I have no codes.

I have replaced the Cam and Crank sensors, antenna ring and second key, fuel relay and have good fuel pressure at the rail. I am hoping to do the ECT and MAF this weekend. Like you, this seems to be spark related. I did a quick check by pulling plugs/coils and grounding them to the engine. Sometines I am getting a spark, sometimes not. From there I'll probably try the ignition.

BTW- you're in good hands with Abscate on your thread!

VolvoOH - did we skip the ignition switch check in your thread? I don't remember suggesting that - but that could explain the symptoms - and its a known high mileage fail item.

I think we may have...I missed it as well. My need to try that as well after the MAF and ECT. Do you have an ignition switch in your inventory as well?

I do but there is a chassis break so you have to be sure you get the right one.

My used one also has 200k on it.....Im not sure that makes sense vs a new one.

You can monitor voltage at the top fuses on the underhood fusebox as diagnostic

Would also suggest hooking up a node light to see if those fuel injectors are being opened - that is unless your tail pipe smells like gas, in which case I'd assume they are...
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Thanks for the pointers guys. I'm gonna get back under the hood again in the next couple days. At the moment it seems to be stalling less than it was. I've also been riding the MC more lately anyway since I just fixed it as well.

volvooh- I'll be sure and post back here what I eventually determine to be wrong with it.
I'm kinda thinking this could be some kind of what I would call "body control module" on a chevy. Not sure what that equates to in Volvo, but I'm researching it.

I'll be back...

My 94 850 Turbo had a similar problem after it warmed up, it began to stall. Eventually found the code for Throttle Position Sensor (OBDII). Replaced the sensor, no more problems with stalling.
