Grinding noise please help

Is it a turbine-like whine dependant with engine speed?

I wouldn't say so. Sounded the same no matter what speed I was at, but then again was only driven for a few blocks after it happened.

I'm not clear on this, is it an engine speed related issue, so if the car was sitting still and you rev the engine is the noise there and does it change pitch as the revs rise, or does it only happen when the car is being driven?

From what I read here it would appear to be an engine or transmission related issue and that noise should change with engine speed.

If the noise only is around when the car is in motion then it is a drive-line issue.

It does sound like a starter motor not dis-engaging. Remove it and have the starter checked. You may find places in the uS like Autozone, etc., have test units for starters and alternators. Still be wary of those as they don't give a 100% representation of a unit in service. I had one test as good and it wasn't. When I opened it up it had a plastic cover inside that had cracked and started to break up. Needed a new starter and all was then good.

Worst case you can't be too unlucky and try one from a junkyard and see if it works or fixes the issue.

Not an engine speed issue. Happens as soon as I start the car and is constant. I just pulled the starter out and the teeth on the pinion (I think that's what you call it lol) were chipped and the damn thing was stuck. Waiting for a new starter to be shipped and I think my problem is solved, I hope! Thanks everyone for the advice

Check the teeth on the ring gear that the starter connects too for damage. If it has been like that for a while it may have damaged that too.

The ring gear looks good although I didn't rotate it to see all of it. If it is the ring gear that's bad then idk what I will do, a little bit out of my realm.
