I had the same issue with my wife's "03 XC70. After paying $600 to Xemodex to have the DIM rebuilt 3 months ago and buying the car for $1600 2 months before that I wasn't able to fork out another $500 to have the CEM rebuilt also. So I started searching through the database here at MVS and ran across a locked post from hankb from April 11 2014. In it he describes a lot of the same issues I was having: ie 'Brake failure' message; check engine light on; AC stops running; cruise control stops; a couple of times if I didn't stop and turn the car off and back on the transmission clunked. In the post hankb goes through a littany of ideas and money but ultimately solves the problem with DeOxit contact cleaner that I bought on Amazon. I tried this by pulling each of the black fuse boxes/relays out of the CEM spraying the metal tab connections with the DeOxit, letting them dry a couple of minutes then reinserting them into the CEM. My original plan was to spray the connection that goes into the CEM. But couldn't figure out how to remove the wire harness (and I running out of light in the day and would have to be up at 1:30AM to start my day (got to love the bread business). I don't know if the metal tabs were not making good contact and so breaking the continuity in the system?
It has been a week and a half and I have not had the problem again. It had been acting up almost daily. Hope this helps.

None - there are no idiot lights or messages displayed on the DIM relating to this matter or otherwise.
Additionally, the cruise Control functions as it should.
My wife took the car on a 5 hour highway trip today, using the cruise control, without any issues.

So obviously the Volvo service controller is a trained parrot who says to all customers that P2 BCMs contain VIN and mileage which is simply not the case.

BCM software is similar to ETM software in that it must match the hardware fitted and be a match for the CEM and/or ECM software.

If you can score a used BCM from the same model year, car type and existence/non existence of DSTC etc you can score a software match. Like all modules in Volvo cars the software version can vary but you have a pretty good chance of a match if you stick to the above.

UPDATE:

After 2-1/2 years - there have been no issues using the junkyard / salvage yard sourced module from Erie Volvo.
