Don't pay local dealer prices. FCP's reman would probably reach you in N.H. in a day or two and is probably fine. Crazy to pay a dealer $350 for a reman starter. Local NAPA parts store could be an option too.

New starter installed. Car started right up. It even starts faster with this new part.

The old starter must have died from corrosion to the 2" cable between the solenoid and the motor. After removing the starter, I pressed on it and it crumbled. It must have been unable to deliver the electricity due to its corrosion.

How can we prevent this corrosion on our new starters, which are the exact same design as the old ones? Petroleum jelly or hot glue on the exposed ends of the wire? Thanks.

Alas, save another replacement date on August, 2034.

As I have said on here before, I have replaced a starter without removing anything else, but it was not fun.

I've had a couple of cars have starters fail this way. One common symptom was a slight delay, about 1/2-1 second between turning the ignition switch to start/crank and the actual cranking action. It usually preceded failure by a few months

A starter bypass won't help you with this of course, since the current between battery and motor is interrupted by this failure. That was the useful diagnostic here, if course

You could spray the area with undercoating or yearly with ACF 50 as a preventative measure - but ultimately, it is going to fail eventually. I figure if I get 10 or more years on a starter, it owes me nothing.

I just solved what sounds like the exact same problem on my 2000 V70XC Turbo, and the culprit was a bad/dirty connection AT the starter solenoid - the thin wire that supplies 12v to the terminal when you turn the key. I tried the other things mentioned above, including the remote starter terminal, but the problem is that connecting to the remote terminal still sends the 12v to the same wire that connects to the starter terminal.

In the V70 Turbo it is pretty hard to reach the wire/terminal, but when I maneuvered my hand to reach the cable it felt kind of loose. I moved it around a bit then tried to start again, and it actually made a sound like the solenoid activated for a second. I then tried pulling the cable off, but it got tighter while pulling it and it made a better connection...and it started right up. I still have to clean the terminal up and tighten the slip on connector, but at least it is working now.

Hope this helps someone out that is still keeping there V70 running!

If the car you jumped it from saw a draw and you still get no cranking I'm with abscate. You have a starter problem.

Not sure if this helps, but does a manual have any sort of PNP switch or any type of switch that kills current to the starter if it malfunctions?
