New to Forum, just bought '99 S70 AWD

Post by amolnar0829 »

Bought the S70 3 days ago after watching a bunch of Robert DIY incl. pre-purchase checklist did the glove test and case was sucking the glove. I was finding that these year white block cars last 300-500k miles with the maintenance kept up with. Reliable winter daily with some turbo fun was the idea.

I bought the '99 S70 AWD for $1300.

The GOOD:
1) Runs and drives, AWD works well
2) Viper remote start
3) Hankook winter tires 215/50-16
4) Pioneer Nav+bluetooth audio head unit

The BAD:
1) losing a .5-1 quart of oil every 500 miles from back of block some where looks especially wet with oil where a line connects to the turbo. Oil cap also has some blow by pushing oil up out the cap seal and its a new cap :o
2) Lower control arm bushings loose needs replace of arm
3) Outer tie-rod end has play in the joint/bushing needs replace
4) 10-20% throttle is inconsistent and jolts the car idle is mostly rock solid at 850 or maybe 900 with the A/C off but the car hesitates and jolts on cruise control even with A/C off
5) reverse feels weak
6) A/C clutch engages then disengages constantly about every 3 seconds when A/C on and no cold air (I tried zip ties to help the a/c clutch engage more but a couple people told me it may just need a recharge)
7) When A/C is on car jolts alot when sitting with foot on the brake in Drive

Do you think I got a good deal?

I'm trying to repair and stage 0 this beast before winter hits in a few months in MN.

Welcome to MVS!!

The 1999 is the best year for V70s, you get a cool Italian throttle body that you get to replace every 100,000 miles or so for much less than you paid for your car. Maybe.

You do have some throttle body symptoms but first step is to pull plugs, check compression and report back how many miles are on this car, as well as plug condition - pictures best

The turbo oil lines are easy to repair with good Volvo gaskets - cheaper to use off brand but then you have to do them again in a year.

Welcome aboard!
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.
1999 V70 XC AWD 2.4 T -- ~231k miles
1998 V70 2.4 NA -- ~184k miles

The BAD:
1) losing a .5-1 quart of oil every 500 miles from back of block some where looks especially wet with oil where a line connects to the turbo. Oil cap also has some blow by pushing oil up out the cap seal and its a new cap :o
Buy a new oil cap seal. Oil line O-rings and gaskets like Abscate said.

2) Lower control arm bushings loose needs replace of arm
3) Outer tie-rod end has play in the joint/bushing needs replace
R+R the arms, you should have "4-bolt" A-arms while you have it apart do your tie rods, then get an alignment.

4) 10-20% throttle is inconsistent and jolts the car idle is mostly rock solid at 850 or maybe 900 with the A/C off but the car hesitates and jolts on cruise control even with A/C off
Look for a replacement ETM, used yellow label, or contactless.

5) reverse feels weak
treat it nicely, drain and fill trans-see threads for this process.

6) A/C clutch engages then disengages constantly about every 3 seconds when A/C on and no cold air (I tried zip ties to help the a/c clutch engage more but a couple people told me it may just need a recharge)
Do the bread tie/zip-tie fix

7) When A/C is on car jolts alot when sitting with foot on the brake in Drive
see the above.

Stage zero-smoke test and fix all the leaky vacuum lines. tune-up, see what changes.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
